Vietnamese Vocabulary Words

Have you ever dreamed of visiting Vietnam or even relocating and spending a semester learning abroad or working in the country? Or perhaps you have learned of your family’s roots in the country and wish to dig deeper so that you can learn more about yourself in the process, or wish to connect with your spouse in a meaningful way by being able to communicate with his or her family in their native language. However you have made the decision to learn the Vietnamese language, you will need to build a strong Vietnamese vocabulary. This will be the basis on which you build the rest of your learning and will enable you to communicate very early in your learning process.

Just as with the English language, having a wide and varied vocabulary in Vietnamese you will be able to communicate, seek information, and understand relayed messages more easily. Even if you do not know every word that is spoken to you, having a wide vocabulary can help you to pick out those words and phrases that you do know so you can piece together the rest of the message. Much of your Vietnamese lessons will revolve around teaching you such a vocabulary, as well as encouraging you to participate in activities that can help you to grow your own vocabulary to supplement your lessons.

One of the best ways that you can build you vocabulary when you are learning how to speak Vietnamese is to always carry with you a high quality, comprehensive, and user friendly Vietnamese dictionary with you at all times. You may not feel like you have a lot of time to devote to your learning process when you are not involved in your structured lessons, but having your dictionary on hand will help you to take advantage of little bits of time that you find throughout the day. You may even find yourself playing a game with yourself trying to sneak in a few minutes exploring your dictionary and trying to learn a few new words, or a few new conversational phrases, in the time that you have to wait for your doctor’s appointment, or while you are walking to class.

Of course, the best way to solidify your learning of the Vietnamese language is to use your words. Slip them into conversation, label everything in your home, name a new pet something in the language—however you can use these new words will help you to make them functional processes of your mind.
