| Brandon: In this lesson you will learn how to express your opinion and agreement. The conversation takes place at school and is between Hoa, Minh and An. |
| Huyen: They are friends, so they will be using informal Vietnamese. |

| Brandon: I agree with you. Sport is very good for our health. |

| Brandon: That's right. Let's play badminton from tomorrow. |

| Brandon: I totally agree. |

| Brandon: Huyen, do you play sports? |
| Huyen: Yes, I do aerobics three times a week. And you? |
| Brandon: I play soccer every weekend. Do you like soccer? |
| Huyen: Yes, I’m a big fan of soccer. Did you know that Vietnamese people are some of the craziest soccer fans? |
| Brandon: Oh wow! Really? That’s really interesting. How big is it over there? |
| Huyen: It’s become part of daily life. Soccer is the sport that attracts the biggest audience in Vietnam. When there’s a big soccer competition like the World Cup, Euro Cup or SEA games, the sports event of South East Asian countries, Vietnamese people talk about it every day. The excitement can be felt in the streets too. |
| Brandon: What about in day-to-day life? Which sports do people play? |
| Huyen: They like to exercise with a group in a park or around a lake. |
| Brandon: What do they do? |
| Huyen: They usually do aerobics, jogging or badminton. |

| KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
| Brandon: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is: |
| Huyen: bận |
| Brandon: busy. |
| Huyen: When you want to say you’re busy doing something, add the verb indicating the action right after the adjective “bận”. The verb that follows “bận” is in its bare form. |
| Brandon: For example |
| Huyen: Tôi bận học. |
| Brandon: I’m busy studying. |
| Huyen: Tôi bận chuẩn bị cho kỳ thi tuần tới. |
| Brandon: I’m busy preparing for next week’s exam. |
| Huyen: Cô ấy bận chọn lựa quần áo cho buổi tiệc. |
| Brandon: She’s busy choosing clothes for the party. |
| Huyen: Secondly, we’ll learn about a reduplicative. You might remember, you learned something about it in lesson 4. |
| Brandon: A reduplicative is a word that contains two or more identical or very similar parts and the effect is to increase or decrease the intensity of that word, usually an adjective or an adverb. |
| Huyen: In this lesson, we have the adjective “mệt” and its reduplicative form is “mệt mỏi” meaning “weary”, which increases the meaning of “tiredness”. |
| Brandon: Let’s hear some examples. |
| Huyen: Hôm nay thật là mệt mỏi. |
| Brandon: Today’s so tiring. |
| Huyen: Sau một ngày làm việc mệt mỏi, tôi thường đi bơi. |
| Brandon: After a tiring working day, I often go swimming. |
| Huyen: Cô ấy làm việc không biết mệt mỏi. |
| Brandon: She keeps working without feeling tired. |
| Huyen: Finally, we have “chơi” |
| Brandon: Which means “to play” and is often used with nouns indicating a kind of sport or a musical instrument. |
| Huyen: chơi cờ |
| Brandon: to play chess |
| Huyen: chơi tennis |
| Brandon: to play tennis. |
| Huyen: chơi ghita |
| Brandon: to play guitar |
| Huyen: But it also has three other meanings which are commonly used in daily Vietnamese. |
| Brandon: Firstly, to go out. |
| Huyen: Kết thúc buổi học, cả lớp tôi rủ nhau đi chơi. |
| Brandon: “After the class is over, my class goes out together.” Secondly, to be in a friendship with someone: |
| Huyen: Tôi chơi với Lan lâu rồi. |
| Brandon: Literally, “I have been played with Lan for ages”, meaning “Lan and I have been friends for ages.”: The third meaning is: “to come over and spend time together” |
| Huyen: Which is Cuối tuần đến nhà tôi chơi nhé. |
| Brandon: Literally “Come over to my house and play this weekend”, meaning “Come to my house and spend some time together this weekend”. Okay, now onto the grammar. |

| Brandon: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express your opinion and agreement. |
| Huyen: In the dialogue, we had Tớ nghĩ là chúng ta nên chơi thể thao. |
| Brandon: "I think that we should play sports" |
| Huyen: To express your opinion, use the verb “nghĩ” - to think, followed by “là” or “rằng” which means “that” and add the clause expressing your idea or opinion. |
| Brandon: For example, |
| Huyen: Tôi nghĩ rằng cải cách giáo dục là việc quan trọng nhất. |
| Brandon: "I think that educational reform is the most important.” |
| Huyen: Tớ nghĩ là cậu không nên thức khuya nhiều như thế. |
| Brandon: "I think that you shouldn’t stay up late that much”. |
| Huyen: Tôi nghĩ rằng mình cần có nhiều kinh nghiệm thực tế hơn. |
| Brandon: “I think that I need more practical experiences.” |
| Huyen: To express your agreement with someone else’s idea, there are several ways to reply. |
| Brandon: Firstly, you can say. |
| Huyen: Tôi đồng ý với- “I agree with”, plus the 2nd person pronoun such as “Tôi đồng ý với anh” |
| Brandon: “I agree with you” |
| Huyen: Secondly, you can say: Tôi cũng nghĩ vậy. |
| Brandon: I think so too. |
| Huyen: You can also say: “Nhất trí” which also means “I agree”. It is usually used to express an agreement with an activity or action. |
| Brandon: Another way to say “I agree” is |
| Huyen: Đúng đấy |
| Brandon: That’s right. |
| Huyen: Finally, an informal phrase: Đồng ý cả hai tay. |
| Brandon: Literally, “agree with both hands”. That means “I totally agree” Let’s look at some sentences in the dialogue again and see how those phrases were used. |
| Huyen: Hoa says, “Tớ nghĩ là chúng ta nên chơi thể thao.” |
| Brandon: I think we should play sports. |
| Huyen: Then An replies with, “Tớ đồng ý với cậu” |
| Brandon: I agree with you. |
| Huyen: Then An continues saying, Thể thao rất tốt cho sức khỏe. |
| Brandon: Sports are very good for our health. |
| Huyen: Minh agrees by saying, “Đúng đấy” |
| Brandon: That’s right. |
| Huyen: Finally, Minh suggests, Từ mai mình chơi cầu lông nhé |
| Brandon: Let’s play badminton from tomorrow. |
| Huyen: Then An and Hoa both totally agree. They say, Đồng ý cả hai tay. |
