Hi washington irving,

Thank you for the question.

Yes, you are correct. We use "Xin chào", which is OK for all times as it means "hello".

Actually, in daily speech, Vietnamese people use "Xin chào" instead of "Chào buổi sáng/ Chào buổi chiều/ Chào buổi tối".

"Chào buổi sáng/ Chào buổi chiều/ Chào buổi tối" - These phrases, we usually use to explain the meaning of "Good morning/ afternoon/ evening" for English learners 😄

Hope that it can help.

Best

Chi

wouldn't you say that good morning is chào buổi sáng, good afternoon is chào buổi chiều, good evening is chào buổi tố rather than just xin chào, which i understand is okay for all times, but not strictly the same meaning as good morning, evening etc?

"I don't understand"

"Please speak slower"

"Say that again please"

"How much is it?"

"Sorry, I don't speak Vietnamese"

"I love you"

I'm sure these are very important basics too.

How about "May I have..." as in "May I have... some water / the time / this dish, etc"

Hi, I'm Hiro,

How about "What's this?" and "Can I try it?" These phrases would make our visit to Vietnam even more more exciting.
