Hi Sammie,

Thanks for your comment and glad to hear that the closed captions helps!

Regarding your question: The most general way to address yourself and the person you are speaking to is "tôi/ I" and "bạn/you" in a conversation. "Anh" (for male) and "chị" (for female) are 2 other forms of object pronouns for when you want to be extra polite. If the person whom you are speaking with is clearly much older than you, we have corresponding object pronouns as below:

- If that's a male, use "Chú/ uncle", "Bác/ older uncle", "Ông/ grandfather", "Cụ/ great grandfather".

- If that's a female, use "Cô/ dì/ aunt", "Bác/ older aunt", "Bà/ grandmother", "Cụ/ great grandmother".

The Vietnamese pronouns system is basically based on the genres and ages compared to the speaker/ subject pronoun, also on the context or circumstances of the conversations. Hope this helps explain a bit! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Best,

Khanh

My language learning app uses "bạn" for "you," but I notice that you use "chị" and "anh" (which I think mean "sister" and "him") in this dialogue. What is the reason for this? Is it rude to use "bạn"?

I really appreciate the closed captions! They are helping me learn how the tones sound.
