Hi everyone, it's Linh. |
Xin chào các bạn, tôi là Linh. |
Welcome to the Whiteboard Lessons. |
In this lesson, you're going to learn how to give your name in Vietnamese, |
cách giới thiệu tên trong tính Việt. |
In particular, I'm going to introduce to you the sentence structure, |
some vocabulary and also some grammar points |
so that you can be confidently introducing your name. |
Now let's get started. |
Introducing your name is the most important and the most common thing |
when you learn a new language, right? |
Now let's take a look at the dialogue and see |
what we can say when introducing your name in Vietnamese. |
First one, we have |
Xin chào, tôi là Tiến Trần. Rất vui được gặp anh. |
Rất vui được gặp anh, tôi là Thái Lâm. |
One more time, I'm going to speak slowly. |
Xin chào, tôi là Tiến Trần. Rất vui được gặp anh. |
Rất vui được gặp anh, tôi là Thái Lâm. |
Clear? Now one more time with a normal speed. |
Xin chào, tôi là Tiến Trần. Rất vui được gặp anh. |
Rất vui được gặp anh, tôi là Thái Lâm. |
Very simple, right? Now let's take a look at what it means in English. |
Hi, welcome back. |
Now I'm going to give you the translation of the dialogue that we mentioned before. |
First one, we have |
Xin chào. |
It means hello. |
Xin chào. |
Next one, we have |
tôi là Tiến Trần. |
Tôi means I. |
Là is to be verb |
and then Tiến Trần is a Vietnamese name. |
Tôi là Tiến Trần. |
It means I'm Tiến Trần. |
Rất vui được gặp anh. |
We have rất means very. |
Vui means happy. |
Rất vui is like very nice or very happy. |
được gặp anh. |
To see you. |
Okay? |
Rất vui được gặp anh is like very happy to see you or very happy to meet you, |
which is nice to meet you. |
And then the second person, he said |
Rất vui được gặp anh, |
which is nice to meet you too. |
But in Vietnamese, we don't really have to use to here. |
You just use the exact same sentence. |
Rất vui được gặp anh. |
Okay? |
Nice to meet you too. |
And then introducing his name. |
Tôi là Thái Lâm. |
I'm Thái Lâm. Okay? |
Xin chào. Tôi là Tiến Trần. Rất vui được gặp anh. |
Rất vui được gặp anh. Tôi là Thái Lâm. |
Hello, I'm Tiến Trần. Nice to meet you. |
Nice to meet you too. I'm Thái Lâm. |
Clear? |
Alright, let's move on to the next part, which is the sentence pattern. |
Now, let's look at the sentence pattern. |
This pattern will be the structure that all of our dialogue will follow. Okay? |
In this lesson, we're going to have a very basic structure. |
Tôi là. |
It means I am and then you put your name after that. |
Very easy, right? |
Tôi is first person singular pronoun, which is I. |
Là is the verb to be and then you put your name here. |
Tôi là. |
In Vietnamese, we don't have to conjugate the verb, |
so là will remain the same with any other pronouns. |
Tôi là. |
Now, let's move on to the next part. |
Moving on to the next part, |
now we're going to talk about the cultural points in this context. Okay? |
So, first one, we have tôi tên là, |
which means my name is. |
Tôi tên là. |
Now, we have learned to use tôi là to introduce your name, right? |
And then we have tôi tên là. |
It also means I am. |
But in this situation, it specifically means my name is. Okay? |
Tôi tên là, tôi tên là. |
So, both tôi là and tôi tên là |
are common and are used to introduce your name. |
Tôi tên là, okay? |
But one small thing that you need to pay attention to is |
for tôi là, this structure, we can use in a lot more situations. |
For example, giving your occupation, giving your nationality, giving your name. |
However, tôi tên là is only used to give your name. |
That's the only difference. Okay? |
Tôi tên là. |
Now, the second one you have to pay attention to is |
rất vui được gặp anh and rất vui được gặp bạn. |
Here you see the difference that we have anh and bạn. |
Two different pronouns. |
So, we use anh for formal situations and we use bạn for informal situations. |
For example, |
when I speak to someone who is older than me and is the man, I say |
Rất vui được gặp anh. |
It sounds a little bit more polite and more formal. |
However, if I meet my friends or my colleagues or |
someone who I've known before, I would say |
Rất vui được gặp bạn. |
Okay? |
So, one small thing here, bạn also means friend. |
So, that's why it's used for people who are the same age. |
Rất vui được gặp bạn. |
It means nice to meet you. |
Alright, let's sum up. |
We have tôi tên là is another way to say I am, |
but it means my name is. Okay? |
The second one. |
Rất vui được gặp anh |
for formal situations and |
rất vui được gặp bạn |
for informal situations. |
Now, I'm going to give you some examples. |
For example, when I introduce my name, I would say |
Xin chào. Tôi Tiến là Linh. Rất vui được gặp anh. |
Or in a formal situation, I would say |
Xin chào. Tôi là Linh. Rất vui được gặp anh. |
We just had a dialogue, right? |
And now, let's review a little bit by going through |
some vocabulary in this lesson. |
The first one, we have |
Tôi |
which means I. |
Tôi |
The next one, we have |
là. |
Actually, it's not really em, but it's to be verb. Okay? |
And we can use with any pronouns. |
Tôi |
là. |
The next one, we have |
xin chào. |
It means hello. |
And this is the most common way to say hello in Vietnam. |
xin chào. |
Alright, let me fix this one a little bit. So we have xin chào. Okay? |
xin chào. |
And then the next one, we have |
rất vui được gặp anh. |
Rất vui được gặp anh. |
It means nice to meet you. |
We have rất vui is nice. |
Rất vui |
to, means được. |
Gặp is meet. |
And you is anh. Okay? |
Rất vui được gặp anh. |
