Xin chào mọi người, tôi tên là Linh
Hello everyone, my name is Linh and welcome back to the Whiteboard Lessons.
In this lesson, you're going to learn how to describe someone using adjectives in Vietnamese.
Miu tả một ai đó.
And in particular, I want to introduce you some vocabulary
so that you can apply in a sentence pattern
that you're going to be also provided with.
And we're going to take a look at some examples,
a dialogue, and there will be two bonuses at the end of the lesson.
So stay tuned and let's get started.
Let's take a look at the vocabulary.
Cao.
It means tall and the C sound in Vietnamese is stronger.
Cơ.
So you have to be strong and thick.
Cao.
It's tall.
Ưa nhìn.
It's good looking.
And nhìn is a bit tricky for foreigners, right?
The nhờ sound.
nhìn
Ưa nhìn.
Good looking.
The next one.
Trẻ.
So hoi.
Trẻ.
It means young.
Trẻ.
And if you're wondering what's the opposite of trẻ, we have...
Trung tuổi.
So it's like 40 plus.
People in their 30 years or 40s.
Trung tuổi.
No, 40s or 50s.
It's like middle-aged.
Trung tuổi.
Okay, so we have trẻ and Trung tuổi.
Next one, we have nhỏ nhanh.
Nhỏ nhắn.
Again, nhờ.
Nhỏ nhắn.
It means small or someone is short,
but you don't want to say they're short, so you say they're small.
Nhỏ nhắn.
Next one,
bình thường.
Bình thường.
It means normal, but it's not like in a negative way.
It's like everyone else.
They're normal like everyone else.
Bình thường.
Ngâm đen.
Ngâm đen
đen is black.
Ngâm đen is like tanned.
Ngâm đen.
In Vietnamese, if you say someone is black, it sounds a little bit like brutal.
So ngâm đen is like their skin is dark instead of black.
Ngâm đen.
Because Vietnamese people like to have bright skin.
Gây.
Thin.
Gây.
Okay, and the last one
đập người.
Which is heavy or a little bit overweight
but we don't want to say people are fat, right?
Fat, which is béo, but we don't say that.
So instead, we say đập người.
Okay, so a few things to notice.
The first one is ché, which is the chó sound.
Trẻ and chó are quite similar, tr and ch.
This one is a bit stronger.
This one stronger, and this one lighter.
Trẻ
And ché, ché means differently, but basically they sound quite similar.
Ché.
Okay, that's it.
Okay, so now let's review all the words one more time.
Cao.
Ưa nhìn.
Trẻ
Trung tuổi.
Nhỏ nhắn.
Bình thường.
Ngâm đen.
Gây.
Đập người.
Và béo.
Okay, clear?
Let's move on to the next part.
Now let's take a look at the sentence pattern.
And this pattern will be the structure that our dialogue will follow.
And it's very easy.
Trust me, you don't want to miss.
So this is the sentence pattern.
Very easy, just two components.
The first one is anh ảy / cô ảy, and then you put the adjective.
That's all.
Remember that to be verb is reduced in spoken Vietnamese.
So no need to worry.
Anh ảy, cô ảy, adjective.
Which is he and she and then you put the adjective, okay?
For example, anh ảy đậm người.
Or
cô ảy ngâm đen.
Anh ảy ưa nhìn.
Cô ảy trẻ.
Easy, right?
Since this is very short and easy, I'm gonna give you a bonus at the end of the lesson.
So don't miss it.
Now let's move on to the next part, dialogue.
Let's look at the dialogue.
When I speak
I want you to pay attention to the vocabulary
that we mentioned here and see how they are used in a sentence.
Okay, let's go.
Anh ảy trông như thế nào?
And how do we answer?
Anh ảy ưa nhìn.
Anh ảy is he, trông is look, như thế nào is how.
And the question form is he looks how, okay?
So that means how does he look?
And to respond to that, we say anh ảy ưa nhìn.
He's good looking.
Anh ảy trông như thế nào? anh ảy ưa nhìn
How does he look? He's good looking.
And let's take a look at the second dialogue.
Cô ảy trông như thế nào?
Cô ảy nhỏ nhắn.
Cô ảy trông như thế nào?
Cô ảy nhỏ nhắn.
Okay, so here you have the subject and then trông như thế nào
and you replace with the pronoun which is
cô ảy trông như thế nào.
Cô ảy nhỏ nhắn.
How does she look?
She's small.
Now let's read one more time.
Anh ảy trông như thế nào?
Anh ảy ưa nhìn.
Cô ảy trông như thế nào?
Cô ảy nhỏ nhắn.
Okay, good.
Let's move on to the next part.
Let's take a look at some speaking examples
based on the vocabulary, the sentence pattern.
I'm going to give you some other examples.
Okay, first one.
Cô ảy trè.
Cô ảy trè.
Cô ảy trè.
She's young.
Subject, adjective.
Cô ảy trè.
Second one.
Cô ảy bình thường.
Cô ảy bình thường.
She's normal.
Cô ảy bình thường.
Next one.
Anh ảy ngâm đen.
Anh ảy ngâm đen.
Anh ảy ngâm đen.
He's thin.
And the last one.
Anh ảy gầy.
Anh ảy gầy.
Anh ảy gầy.
He's thin.
Now let's review one more time.
But this time a little bit faster.
Cô ảy trè.
Cô ảy bình thường.
Anh ảy ngâm đen.
Anh ảy ngâm đen.
Good job.
Now let's move on to the next part.
As usual, there will be two bonuses in this lesson.
So as you can see here this sentence pattern is very short and simple right?
But if you want to add more information
or you want to extend your sentences, what do you say?
The first one we can put
VÀ.
VÀ.
And then another adjective.
So VÀ
it means end to connect two similar ideas.
For example
Anh ảy gầy và ngâm đen.
Anh ảy gầy và ngâm đen.
ok
Or
Cô ảy trè và ưa nhìn.
Cô ảy trè và ưa nhìn.
This is how you extend your sentences,
how you speak at length to add more information.
và it means end. ok!
So và end.
Another one
if you want to connect two opposite ideas, we say
mà.
It means yet.
So instead of saying và, we say mà.
For example
Anh ảy ngâm đen mà ưa nhìn.
Anh ảy ngâm đen mà ưa nhìn.
Assuming ngâm đen
is a bit negative and ưa nhìn is a bit positive.
So that means although he's tanned, he's good looking.
Anh ảy ngâm đen mà ưa nhìn.
Another one
Anh ảy đậm người mà cao.
Anh ảy đậm người mà cao.
Assuming that usually heavy people are not too tall
but this one is heavy but tall.
Anh ảy đậm người mà cao.
So those are two bonuses.
The first one you add VÀ
to connect two similar ideas
and MÀ to connect two opposite ideas which is adjective. ok
VÀ
MÀ
