Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 6 - Where is the Bathroom? in Southern Vietnamese.
In today’s lesson, we’ll cover an extremely important phrase, “Where is the Bathroom?” In Vietnamese, “Where is the Bathroom?” is said Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu?
One more time slowly, Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu?
Let’s break it down by syllable: Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu?
Now, let’s hear it again, Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu?
Let’s break down the phrase and take a look at the components.
The first word nhà literally means “house.” Nhà is said in the gradually falling tone.
So again, nhà.
nhà
This is followed by the word for “bathroom,” vệ sinh.
Again, vệ sinh.
Vệ is said in the sharp falling tone with a heavy stop.
Sinh has no tone.
So again, vệ sinh.
vệ sinh
Then we finally have ở đâu which means "where."
The first part ở is said in the falling rising tone.
This tone is a bit tough, so let’s hear it again, ở.
And ở.
Đâu has no tone.
So again, đ.
All together, we have Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu?
This literally means "House bathroom where?" but we translate this to the English equivalent of "Where is the bathroom?"
Now, when you finally get to the bathroom, there may be one last hurdle. In some instances, only the Vietnamese words are written on the doors. What to do, what to do? Well, you can stop by the website and find the words for men and women. Find them inside the PDF.
Most public bathrooms in Vietnam are the squatting style and do not provide toilet paper. For people who travel a lot, it may be common sense to always carry toilet paper, but for those who don’t, I suggest carrying some with you at all times. And before using the bathroom, some leg stretching wouldn’t hurt.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so, chúc may mắn, this means “good luck” in Vietnamese.
