Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 27 - Asking Where You Can Find Something in Southern Vietnamese.
In today's lesson we'll introduce you to a phrase that will help you track down that specific something you're looking for. Today’s phrase is "Where do they sell (something, something)?" First we need "something," so let's look at the word mũ which means “hat.”
Let’s break that down a little bit, mũ.
Mũ is said in the broken rising tone.
Let’s hear it again, mũ.
In Vietnamese "Where do they sell...?" is ở đâu có bán?
Again, ở đâu có bán?
Let’s break that down by syllable: ở đâu có bán?
ở đâu có bán?
So to ask "Where can I buy hats?" you simply say ở đâu có bán mũ?
Again, ở đâu có bán mũ?
ở đâu có bán mũ?
As you can see, the item we are looking for comes at the end of the phrase.
So again, ở đâu có bán mũ?
The first two words, ở đâu, should be familiar, we heard it in the phrase Nhà vệ sinh ở đâu? which means "Where is the bathroom?" As a reminder, ở đâu means "where." ở is said in the rising tone and đâu is said in the flat tone. Let’s practice it, ở đâu.
ở đâu
This is followed by có bán.
có bán
The words có bán are both the rising tone and translate as "to sell."
Let’s practice, có bán.
có bán
So the entire phrase, ở đâu có bán?
ở đâu có bán?
This literally means "Where to sell?"
Now, to ask for a different item, we just replace the word for "hat" with any other word. Let's try trái cây which means "fruit." Trái is the rising tone and cây has no tone.
trái cây
trái cây
So to ask "Where do they sell fruit?," we say ở đâu có bán trái cây?
ở đâu có bán trái cây?
ở đâu có bán trái cây?
This phrase will come in handy before leaving the hotel, talking with taxi drivers, or other people trying to help you locate a desired item.
Now, that you’re able to ask, you’re going to get an answer, but since we’re running out of time, we’re gonna have to cover that in the next lesson.
Outdoor supermarkets in Vietnam can be super confusing, but usually, people selling similar items cluster together, so it’s best to shop around to get the best deal.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so, chúc may mắn, this means “good luck” in Vietnamese.
Okay, here we go!
“Where do they sell...?” - ở đâu có bán...?
ở đâu có bán...?
ở đâu có bán...?
“hat” - mũ
“fruit” - trái cây

All right, that's going to do it for this lesson. Remember to stop by VietnamesePod101.com and pick up the accompanying PDF lesson notes. If you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment. Bye!
