Hi everyone! Do you enjoy Vietnamese songs? Do know what "dân ca" is?

Hello Chris,

Thank you for your comment.

There are some differences in these pairs: s/ x; ch/ tr; d/ gi/ r.

In Vietnam, we put name in this order: Last name, Middle name, First name

Please let us know if you have further question.

Best regards,

Nguyet Nguyen

Xin chào, Nguyet Nguyen,

Thank you. So When I would travel to Hanoi it's zõ,

if to Ho Chi Minh it's rõ.

Are there many such differences?

BTW: In Chinese, name comes before what's said, is this also in Vietnamese

or like we are used to?

Cảm ơn bạn rất nhiều,

Christiaan (or if you like Chris )

Hello Christiaan,

Thank you for your feedback.

You have very good ears.

Yes, it is correct that in dialogue, "r" in "rõ" is pronounced as "r" with tongue's vibration. In vocabulary, "r" is pronounced as "z". But both ways are fine, "r" is pronounced as "z" in the North, bu as "r" in the South of Vietnam.

Please let us know if you have further question.

Thank you.

Hello,

Perhaps my Belgian ears are not good enough ?

In dialogue rõ sounds like rõ, BUT I hear in section

'vocabulary' this same rõ pronounced like zõ. ??

Cảm ơn bạn,

Christiaan

Hi d8nvn,

Don't worry. It is very common to pronounce "r" as "dz" in the north and it is still well understood in the south or in any other regions in Vietnam and surely you will not offend anyone.

Cheers,

Giang

Okay this has been confusing for me. The word "rất" in many of your audio files does seem to be in the Northern voice. I am assuming the "dz" will still be understood (with my Chicago accent ) in HCMC. Or to be sure, will I be offending anyone?

Hi Hendrik,

Thank you for the comment. And you're right. We had southern accent (in Saigon) for the main audio, and the northern accent for the Expansion with the Audio files.

Just for your reference,  the consonant "r" can be pronounced as /dz/ in Hanoi, and as /r/ in Saigon.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you,

Hello,

regarding "rõ" ...

Did you mix up the "northern" and "southern" dialect here?!

It sounds like you speak out "rõ" in southern dialect in the main audio lesson and use the northern dialect in "Expansion with Audio"?!

Cheers,

Hendrik
