"we use both words so learner can know that those are interchangeable". Without asking via comment and then waiting several days for a response, the learner has absolutely no way of knowing they are interchangeable, or which is from the Northern dialect and which from Central/South, because that is not pointed out anywhere.
Hi Aidriano,
That's very good question. In fact, both "trái" and "quả" are classifier for fruit or stuff which has round shape. "trái" is used in the Middle and the South of Vietnam while "quả" is used in the North.
So you can say: "trái sầu riêng" or "quả sầu riêng"; "trái chôm chôm" or "quả chôm chôm". All are correct.
Some other examples :
- "ball" - football is "quả bóng" (Northern) / "trái bóng" (Southern)
- "papaya" - is "quả đu đủ" (Northern) / "trái đu đủ" (Southern)
In the lesson note, we use both words so learner can know that those are interchangeable.
Best,
Huyen

Given that both are fruits, could you please explain why "trái" sầu riêng, but "quả" chôm chôm?
Chào Nick,
You are always welcome.
I like listening to your story and how you love Vietnam and Vietnamese.
See ya,

Chào Giang,
Thank you for teaching me how to say this. I have never been afraid to apologize and ask forgiveness when I am wrong, so I think it will be a good phrase to know.
I do intend to say this to my love. For all the pain I have gone through since we've been apart, I am certain she has felt it as well and I am very sorry. I always promised to protect her...I never thought she would have to choose between me and her family.
There is a quote by Norman Cousins that says "Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live." After what I have been through, I can honestly say this is true, and I hope that my sincere apology can give her some small relief.
Thank you for always helping me,
NIck
Chào Nick,
"Please forgive me" in Vietnamese is "Hãy tha thứ cho tôi." ("Tha thứ" means "forgive")
To make it more sincere (more like begging), you can add "xin": "Xin hãy tha thứ cho tôi."
Are you gonna say this to someone?
Hẹn gặp lại,
Giang

Hi Khiêm,
Thank you for sharing with us about your wife's interest in durian. Durian is not a fruit that is easy to eat to everyone, but once you can eat it, you may be addicted to it, right?
If you have any comments or questions, feel free to let us know.
