Hi David,

Thanks for posting! Both words mean "help" but "giúp" is more commonly used in northern Vietnam while "giùm" is more common in southern Vietnam.

Sincerely,

Khanh

Hi Jonathon,

Thank you for your question.

To ask for permission, you can use the following structure:

Tôi có thể + Verb phrase + được không? (May I ...?)

For example:

Tôi có thể chụp ảnh cửa hàng của bạn được không? (chụp ảnh: take a photo, cửa hàng của bạn: your shop)

(May I take a photo of your shop?)

Tôi có thể chụp ảnh bạn được không?

(May I take a photo of you?)

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further explanation.

Cheers,

Giang

Hi Giang,

Thank you for the lesson, my question is how do you ask permission to take a photo, for example of a place, object or even someone else?

For example:

"May I take a photo of your shop"

"May I take a photo of you"

Thank you in advance

-Jonathon

Hi fournicade-3,

Thank you for your question. Please find my explanation as follows:

"Giúp" and "giùm" have similar meaning when they are added after another verb or verb phrase to express that you help someone do something or someone helps you do something. The only difference is that "giúp" is northern Vietnamese while "giùm" are used more commonly in the center and south of Vietnam.

For example:

1. Chị hỏi anh ấy giùm/giúp tôi nhé. (Could you please ask him for me?/Could you please help me ask him?"

2. Làm ơn đọc từ này giùm/giúp tôi. (Please read this word for me)

Another difference is that "giúp" can be followed directly with a pronoun and it means "to help someone" while "giùm" cannot stand alone. "Giùm" is always put after another verb/verb phrase to complement its meaning. You can also say "giúp giùm tôi" (help me) and this has more emphasis.

For example:

"I help her" is translated as "Tôi giúp cô ấy" BUT NOT "Tôi giùm cô ấy". Instead you have to say "Tôi giúp giùm cô ấy" if you want to use "giùm" in this case. Otherwise, simply say "Tôi giúp cô ấy"

Is it all clear to you now?

Please feel free to ask me if you need further clarification.

Cheers,

Giang

Hi Khiêm. I'm a girl so you can't call me "anh". When you don't know the other person's gender, use the general pronoun "bạn". "gặp" means "to meet", so you can only use it when you directly see me. In this case, you should say, "làm quen", which means "to get to know". The whole sentence will then be " rất hân hạnh được làm quen với bạn."

You're right. Chụp ảnh is what northerners say while chụp hình is used in the south.
