INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 20 - Social Media Troubles in Vietnam. Eric here.
Hoang Anh: Xin Chào. I'm Hoang Anh.
Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to say that something is wrong in Vietnamese. The conversation takes place in the cafeteria.
Hoang Anh: It's between Trang and Tùng.
Eric: The speakers are classmates, so they will use informal Vietnamese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Eric: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Trang: I have sent you photos via Facebook.
Tùng: I got them already. But they are so blurred. Why is their size so small?
Trang: It's strange. I did send original photos.
Tùng: The problem is photos sent via Facebook are always resized. Don't you know it?
Trang: So, what should I do now?
Tùng: There are 2 ways – first, you upload original photos to this website, then send me the link of the photos.
Trang: Sounds complicated. I don't know how to do it.
Tùng: Calm down, I haven't finished yet. The second way is to send photos directly by email.
Trang: I have to open my email again?
Tùng: Come on, don't be lazy. Send them to me. I'll treat you to ice-cream later.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Hoang Anh, do Vietnamese people use Facebook or other social networks in Vietnam?
Hoang Anh: Of course! There are more than 32 million people using social networks in Vietnam, which is about 36% of the total population.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Hoang Anh: từ từ
Eric: which means “calm down,” “slow down,” or “don't hurry”. In our dialog, we used it to reply to what was said earlier by the other speaker. In this case, it means “calm down, please” or “slow down, don't hurry” and it implies that “there's more I want to say” or “there is more we can do, or have to do”.
Hoang Anh: We use từ từ in daily conversation only. You can also use Từ từ đã interchangeably with từ từ.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this word?
Hoang Anh: Sure. For example, A says: Đi thôi. B answers: Từ từ. Vẫn còn thời gian mà.
Eric: ..which means “A says: Let's go. B answers: Don't hurry. We still have time.”
Eric: Okay, what's the next word?
Hoang Anh: thôi nào
Eric: which means “come on”
Hoang Anh: thôi means “stop” and nào is an emphatic article. Thôi nào is used as a connecting phrase in a conversation.
Eric: You can use it to encourage someone to do something or stop his or her negative thought, attitude or feeling. It is often followed by advice or a encouraging sentence.
Hoang Anh: Right. Listeners, keep in mind that we use thôi nào in daily conversation only.
Eric: Hoang Anh, can you give us an example using this word?
Hoang Anh: Sure. For example.. A says: Em thi trượt rồi. Buồn quá. B answers: Thôi nào, em vẫn còn nhiều cơ hội mà.
Eric: .. which means “A says: I failed. I'm so sad.” B answers: “Come on, you still have many chances.”
Eric: Okay, what's the last word?
Hoang Anh: khao
Eric: which means “to treat somebody”, for example, to food or drink.
Hoang Anh: khao is used as a verb and is followed by a noun of person then the verb ăn meaning “eat” or uống meaning “drink,” and finally a noun for a food or drink.
Eric: It means “to treat someone to food or drink”.
Hoang Anh: The verb ăn or uống can sometimes be removed and only the noun of the food or drink is used. khao is most commonly used when someone has good news or something new and wants to share it with other people, so he or she treats them all with a certain type of food or drink.
Eric: In daily life, you can use this word if you want to pay for the other person's part when you go out to eat or drink together. Hoang Anh, can you give us an example using this word?
Hoang Anh: Sure.. A says: Tớ vừa mua xe máy mới. B answers: Khao đi.
Eric: .. which means “A says: I have just bought a new motorbike. B answers: Treat me something. “, in the meaning “to your new motorbike”
Eric: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to say that something is wrong in Vietnamese.
Hoang Anh: To do this, you can use the following structure…Vấn đề là + clause. Vấn đề means “problem” and là means “to be”. The clause that comes after vấn đề là can be a past, present, or future action or event. So, one again...Vấn đề là + clause.
Eric: In English, it means “The problem is..”
Hoang Anh: You can also add the adverb ở đây between “vấn đề” and “là” to form “Vấn đề ở đây là …” for emphasis.
Eric: It means “The problem here is …” Hoang Anh, can you give us some examples?
Hoang Anh: Sure. Vấn đề là cô ấy vẫn không chịu trả lời điện thoại của tôi.
Eric: “The problem is she still hasn’t answered my call yet.”
Hoang Anh: Vấn đề ở đây là chúng ta đang thiếu nhân lực trầm trọng.
Eric: “The problem here is we are facing a serious labor shortage.”
Hoang Anh: Vấn đề là nhiều sinh viên mới tốt nghiệp thiếu các kĩ năng mềm.
Eric: “The problem is many young graduates lack soft skills.” Ok! Let’s move to our next grammar point - transitional phrases. When you want to give explanations or suggestions, you are likely to list options or explain things step by step. In that case, you can use the following transitional phrases to connect the ideas.
Hoang Anh: Một là
Eric: “firstly”. After this, add the first idea or option. The next one is...
Hoang Anh: Hai là
Eric: which means “secondly”
Hoang Anh: Ba là
Eric: “thirdly”. And finally we have...
Hoang Anh: Cuối cùng là
Eric: which means “finally” in English. Hoang Anh, can you give us some examples, please?
Hoang Anh: Sure. Có 2 cách đi. Một là, đi bằng tàu. Hai là đi bằng ô tô.
Eric: “There are two ways to go. First, go by train. Second, go by car.”
Hoang Anh: Another example is... Tôi có vài lời chúc dành cho bạn. Một là, chúc bạn luôn mạnh khỏe. Hai là, chúc bạn thành công hơn. Cuối cùng là, chúc bạn luôn vui vẻ trong cuộc sống.
Eric: “I have some wishes for you. First, I wish you good health. Second, I wish you more success. Finally, I wish you happiness in life.”
Hoang Anh: Có 2 lựa chọn cho bữa tối. Một là ăn ở nhà, em nấu cơm còn anh rửa bát. Hai là, đi ăn ngoài. Anh chọn cái nào?.
Eric: This means “There are two options for dinner. First, eat at home. I will cook and you will wash the dishes. Second, eat out. Which one do you choose?”

Outro

Eric: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Hoang Anh: Tạm biệt.
