INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com. This is Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 19 - Booking a Doctor’s Appointment in Vietnam. Eric here.
Hoang Anh: Xin Chào. I'm Hoang Anh.
Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to schedule a medical appointment. The conversation takes place on the phone.
Hoang Anh: It's between Tâm and Nam.
Eric: The speakers are strangers, so they will use formal Vietnamese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Tâm: Xin chào, đây là phòng khám đa khoa Minh Anh.
Nam: Chào chị, tôi muốn đặt hẹn khám bệnh vào sáng mai.

Nam: Tôi bị đầy bụng khó tiêu. Tôi muốn kiểm tra đường tiêu hóa.
Tâm: Anh có yêu cầu đặc biệt về bác sĩ khám bệnh cho mình không ạ?

Tâm: Would you like a specific doctor to check you?
Nam: If possible, I would like to get checked by doctor Pham An.
Tâm: Doctor Pham An is on his business trip overseas. He will return to work here from next week.
Nam: So, what day will he be available? Please let me know a specific time as well.
Tâm: He will be available at 10 a.m. next Tuesday or next Thursday.
Nam: So let me have an appointment at 10 a.m. next Thursday. Thank you.
Tâm: Yes, sir. Could you please let me know your full name and phone number?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Hoang Anh, what kinds of hospitals are there in Vietnam?
Hoang Anh: There are private clinics and big public hospitals. Many of the private clinics are located near big hospitals for convenient access.
Eric: Which hospitals do Vietnamese people prefer?
Hoang Anh: Well, most Vietnamese people go to a private clinic if their symptoms are not serious, such as common cold, stomachache, toothache, and so on. When it comes to more serious diseases, they usually go to public hospitals because the facilities and doctors' ability and skills are much better in public hospitals than in private clinics.
Eric: But are there high-quality private clinics?
Hoang Anh: Yes. But examination and treatment fees are more expensive than public hospitals. However, some private clinics in Vietnam operate without a license, and there have been cases in which patients suffer from wounds or even death due to the poor skills and irresponsibility of the doctors in private clinics.
Eric: So be careful where you get treated, listeners! Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Eric: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Hoang Anh: nếu có thể
Eric: which means “if possible”
Hoang Anh: nếu means “if” and có thể means “possible”. This phrase is used as a conjunction and is followed by a sentence.
Eric: You can use this phrase to start the conversation when you want to suggest or request something.
Hoang Anh: We use nếu có thể in situations that are formal. In daily life, nếu được, which means “if it is fine”, is used more commonly.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this word?
Hoang Anh: Sure. For example, you can say.. Nếu có thể, anh cho em đi nhờ về nhé.
Eric: ..which means “If possible, could you give me a ride home?” Okay, what's the next word?
Hoang Anh: trở lại
Eric: which means “to come back,” “to return,” or “to be back to the start”. You can use it to express the action of returning to a certain place.
Hoang Anh: Right. For example...trở lại trường
Eric: “return to school”
Hoang Anh: trở lại bệnh viên
Eric: “return to the hospital” . You can also use it to describe the action of being back to the original state or starting point.
Hoang Anh: For example, trở lại trang thái ban đầu
Eric: “back to the original state”
Hoang Anh: trở lại làm việc or làm việc trở lại
Eric: “back to work”
Hoang Anh: This word is often used in a status update, especially by young people. Tôi đã trở lại và lợi hại hơn xưa.
Eric: This means “I'm back and have become stronger, more powerful”. Hoang Anh, can you give us an example using our word?
Hoang Anh: Sure. For example.. Cô ấy đã trở lại với một diện mạo xinh đẹp hơn xưa.
Eric: .. which means “She has come back with a more beautiful look than before.” Okay, what's the last word?
Hoang Anh: luôn
Eric: which means “right away, as well”. It’s an adverb and comes after a verb phrase.
Hoang Anh: You can use luôn after a verb phrase to express that you will do something immediately or you want to urge someone to do something quickly. For example: Tôi sẽ gọi điện cho cô ấy luôn.
Eric: This means “I will call her immediately.”
Hoang Anh: luôn also comes after a verb phrase to express that on the occasion of doing this, someone will do that as well. For example, Làm luôn cả bài này nữa nhé.
Eric: “Do this exercise, too”.
Hoang Anh: Another example is...Cậu xem được kết quả thi chưa? Xem luôn giúp tớ với.
Eric: .. which means “Were you able to see the exam result? Check it for me as well.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to schedule a medical appointment. Let’s begin with how to start the conversation in Vietnamese.
Hoang Anh: You can start with the phrase...Chào anh or Chào chị, tôi muốn đặt hẹn khám bệnh.
Eric: ...which means “Hello, I would like to schedule an appointment for medical examination.”. Hoang Anh, let's break it down to see the meaning of each word.
Hoang Anh: Sure. Chào anh or Chào chị means “Hello sir” or “Hello madam” respectively. Tôi muốn means “I would like to” or “ I want to” and đặt hẹn khám bệnh means “schedule an appointment for medical examination” . If you want to specify the date, add it at the end of the sentence.
Eric: Ok. Let’s practice. How would you say “Hello, I would like to schedule an appointment for examination next Monday.”
Hoang Anh: You can say Chào anh, tôi muốn đặt hẹn khám bệnh vào thứ hai tuần tới. or Chào chị, tôi muốn đặt hẹn khám bệnh vào cuối tuần này.
Eric: And what about “Hello, I would like to schedule an appointment for an examination this Friday afternoon.”
Hoang Anh: That will be Chào chị, tôi muốn đặt hẹn khám bệnh vào chiều thứ sáu tuần này.
Eric: Ok! The next step is checking availability.
Hoang Anh: To do this, first say a question word about time and then add thì bác sĩ khám được ạ , which means “is the doctor available.”
Eric: In English it means “When, what time… is the doctor available for my examination?”
Hoang Anh: Right. For example...Mấy giờ thì bác sĩ khám được ạ?
Eric: “What time is the doctor available for my examination?”
Hoang Anh: Thứ mấy thì bác sĩ khám được ạ?
Eric: “What day of the week is the doctor available for my examination?”
Hoang Anh: Ngày mấy thì bác sĩ khám được ạ?
Eric: “What date is the doctor available for my examination?” Ok. And the last step is confirming the date.
Hoang Anh: To do this, use the following grammar structure: Vậy cho tôi đặt hẹn vào + time phrase. Vậy means “so, well”, cho tôi đặt hẹn means “let me have an appointment” and vào means “at, in, on” in English. Vậy cho tôi đặt hẹn vào + time phrase.
Eric: This means “So... Well, let me have an appointment at/ in/ on …” Hoang Anh, can you give us some sample sentences?
Hoang Anh: Sure. Vậy cho tôi đặt hẹn vào 2 giờ chiều mai.
Eric: “So, let me have an appointment at 2 pm tomorrow.”
Hoang Anh: Vậy cho tôi đặt hẹn vào 9 giờ sáng thứ bảy tuần này nhé
Eric: “So, let me have an appointment at 9 am this Saturday.”
Hoang Anh: Vậy cho tôi đặt hẹn vào 5 giờ chiều nay nhé
Eric: “So, let me have an appointment at 5 pm today.”

Outro

Eric: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Hoang Anh: Tạm biệt.
