| Hoang Anh: Xin chào. I'm Hoang Anh. |
| Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express your hopes and dreams in Vietnamese. The conversation takes place in the school cafeteria. |
| Hoang Anh: It's between Trang and Bình. |
| Eric: The speakers are friends, so they’ll use informal Vietnamese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

| Bình: Yes. My dream is to set up my own company later in Vietnam. You? |
| Trang: Me? I dream of marrying a handsome guy from a rich family, haha. |
| Bình: Haha, your dream is so practical. |
| Trang: I'm kidding. I have to work hard for my career while I'm still young. I hope I’ll be able to get a job in a big bank. |

| Eric: Hoang Anh, do young people in Vietnam have an entrepreneurial spirit? |
| Hoang Anh: I would say most young people have a very strong entrepreneurial spirit. A large number of young people in Vietnam are active on the internet, social media and mobile sites, and have a great enthusiasm for technology. |
| Eric: So many of them start thinking of setting up their own business when they’re in university, right? |
| Hoang Anh: Yes. Books about startup launches are among the best sellers. Startup stories are also shared frequently on social media and attract a lot of readers. |
| Eric: Listeners, did you know that a recent study by Germany’s Technical University of Munich found that Vietnam's entrepreneurial spirit ranked 7th out of the 44 countries surveyed? That’s pretty interesting! Okay, now onto the vocab. |

| KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
| Eric: Let's have a closer look at the some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
| Hoang Anh: trong nước |
| Eric: which means “in the country, domestic” |
| Hoang Anh: trong means “in,” or “inside” and nước means “country, nation.” You can use trong nước both as an adverb phrase and as an adjective. |
| Eric: As an adverb phrase, it means “in,” or “inside one's country” and often comes after the main verb phrase of a sentence. |
| Hoang Anh: Right. For example...làm việc trong nước, which means “work inside the country.” |
| Eric: As an adjective, it means “domestic” and comes before a noun or noun phrase to refer to something that is made or produced domestically. |
| Hoang Anh: For example..sản phẩm trong nước, which means “domestic products.” Listeners, you can use trong nước interchangeably with nội địa to mean “domestic.” |
| Eric: Hoang Anh, is there any difference between those two words? |
| Hoang Anh: nội địa also means “inside the country” but this word has a Chinese origin. |
| Eric: So it can come before a noun or noun phrase to refer to something that is made or produced domestically but it can’t be used as an adverb phrase. |
| Hoang Anh: Right. But trong nước can. |
| Eric: Can you give us an example using our keyword? |
| Hoang Anh: Sure. For example, you can say.. Đây là chương trình tin tức thể thao trong nước. |
| Eric: ...which means “This is a domestic sports news program.” Okay, what's the next word? |
| Hoang Anh: riêng |
| Eric: which means “private.” |
| Hoang Anh: In our lesson we used riêng as an adjective and it comes right after a noun or noun phrase. |
| Eric: In this case, it indicates something of one's own or a private or personal thing. Hoang Anh, can you give us an example using this word? |
| Hoang Anh: For example...Mỗi người cần có một không gian riêng. |
| Eric: ...which means “Everyone needs his or her own private space.” |
| Hoang Anh: Another example is... Tôi đã thuê một tài xế riêng. |
| Eric: “I have hired a personal chauffeur.” Okay, what's the last word? |
| Hoang Anh: nhà giàu |
| Eric: which means “the rich.” |
| Hoang Anh: nhà means “house,” or “family” and giàu means “rich.” |
| Eric: So, it literally means “a rich family” and you can use it as an adjective. |
| Hoang Anh: nhà giàu refers to those who are not rich by themselves but have rich families. The most commonly used phrase is con nhà giàu, |
| Eric: which means “child of a rich family..” Hoang Anh can you give us an example using this word? |
| Hoang Anh: Here it is... Bạn tôi toàn là con nhà giàu. |
| Eric: .. which means “My friends are all from rich families.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

| Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to express your hopes and dreams in Vietnamese. |
| Hoang Anh: To do this you can use the following grammar structure…. Ước mơ của tôi là + d object, or Ước mơ của tôi là sẽ + verb and object. The object is optional in both structures. |
| Eric: It means “My dream is to …” |
| Hoang Anh: Ước mơ means “dream,” của means “of,” and tôi means “I, me.” Ước mơ của tôi |
| Eric: So it literally means “ dream of mine.” |
| Hoang Anh: The pronoun tôi is the most general translation of “I,” or “me.” Depending on who is talking to you, you can change this pronoun into another first person pronoun. là means “to be.” sẽ means “will” and it’s optional. |
| Eric: Ok, to recap here we have... |
| Hoang Anh: Ước mơ của tôi là + verb and object. Or Ước mơ của tôi là sẽ + verb and object. If there’s a time phrase, which means the dream is to be realized at a specific time in the future, it can come right after là or at the end of the sentence. |
| Eric: Can you give us some sentences? |
| Hoang Anh: Sure. For example..Ước mơ của tôi là trở thành phiên dịch viên. |
| Eric: “My dream is to become an interpreter.” |
| Hoang Anh: Ước mơ của em là sẽ đi du học nước ngoài sau khi tốt nghiệp. |
| Eric: “My dream is to go and study abroad after graduation.” |
| Hoang Anh: Ước mơ của tôi là đưa bố mẹ đi du lịch châu u. |
| Eric: “My dream is to take my parents to Europe to do some travelling.” |
| Hoang Anh: Listeners, you can also use another pattern. Tôi ước mơ + verb or Tôi ước mơ sẽ + verb. You can add an object to both patterns but it’s optional. |
| Eric: It means “I dream of doing…” |
| Hoang Anh: For example, you can say...Tôi ước mơ sẽ trở thành phiên dịch viên. |
| Eric: “I dream of becoming an interpreter.” |
| Hoang Anh: Tôi ước mơ được đi du lịch vòng quanh thế giới. |
| Eric: “I dream of travelling around the world.” |
| Hoang Anh: Em ước mơ sẽ có một gia đình hạnh phúc trong tương lai. |
| Eric: “I dream of having a happy family in the future.” Ok! Our next grammar topic is how to express hopes. |
| Hoang Anh: In this case, please use the following grammar structure. Tôi , “I”, + hy vọng, which means “hope,” plus là or rằng, meaning “that” + a clause |
| Eric: Ok, to recap here we have... |
| Hoang Anh: Tôi hy vọng là or rằng + a clause |
| Eric: It means “I hope that…” |
| Hoang Anh: Listeners, please note that là or rằng are optional. |
| Eric: Can you give us some sample sentences? |
| Hoang Anh: Tôi hy vọng mẹ cô ấy sẽ sớm khỏi bệnh. |
| Eric: “I hope her mother will recover from her illness soon.” |
| Hoang Anh: Mình hy vọng là bạn sẽ không hối hận vì đã từ chối công việc này. |
| Eric: “I hope that you won’t regret refusing this job.” |
| Hoang Anh: Tôi hy vọng rằng gia đình tôi luôn mạnh khỏe. |
| Eric: “I hope that my family is always well.” |
