Guys, you need to stay here.
This is going to be interesting, trust me.
I know that it's not going to be easy to travel to Vietnam this time,
and I don't know when you can actually travel to Vietnam.
But we have the internet, right?
And you can start the conversation with anyone, anytime.
So today, I'm going to share with you some sentences,
some phrases that you can use to start a conversation with,
and you can use to make friends.
So my name is Linh.
Welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com, the fastest, easiest,
and most fun ways to learn Vietnamese.
And stay tuned.
The first and the most common one questions in Vietnamese
that we can use with anyone, and it's not polite, sorry,
it's not impolite at all.
So this is something like all Vietnamese people do,
but the other part of the world doesn't,
because this is just our culture.
It's not offensive to ask someone's age,
and it's very common, naturally.
So in this situation in Vietnamese, we can say,
Em xin nam bao nhiêu?
or Anh xin nam bao nhiêu?
That means, when were you born?
Em xin nam bao nhiêu?
Anh xin nam bao nhiêu?
The reason why is because we have a lot of pronouns
for different people and different age.
So that's the reason why that we need to know
when they were born.
So that is easier for us to use the proper pronoun.
So em xin nam bao nhiêu?
Anh xin nam bao nhiêu?
Anh biết em qua.
I know you through.
The next one, if you want to introduce yourself,
and this is like the first time you talk to the person,
and you want them to know how to know them.
We say,
Anh biết em qua.
Anh biết em qua.
I know you through, or I've known you through,
or by something, through someone, or by something.
Anh biết em qua.
Anh biết em qua Facebook, or
Em biết anh qua Anh Sơn.
Em biết anh qua Anh Sơn.
Em làm ở đâu?
Where do you work?
So after introducing yourself,
you can ask about each other's job.
We say,
Anh làm ở đâu?
Anh làm ở đâu?
Anh làm ở đâu?
Ở đâu is where.
Anh, you, làm, work.
So in Vietnamese,
the position of the words will be opposite to English.
Instead of saying,
Where do you work?
We say,
You work where?
Anh làm ở đâu?
It's the same with,
Em làm ở đâu?
Em làm ở đâu?
Em làm ở đâu?
Em làm ở trung tâm tiếng Anh.
Em sống một mình hay sống với gia đình?
Do you live alone or with your family?
Another common question is,
Do you live with your family or do you live alone?
So nowadays it's very common to live
separately from the family, of course.
However, some people still live with their family.
For example, I do.
Because like before marriage,
usually people will live with their family.
Unless you live in another city,
or you move somewhere to work,
something like that.
Because I work in Hanoi,
and I used to live separately,
but now I live with my family.
So I can say,
Em sống với bố mẹ.
Em sống với bố mẹ.
Em sống với bố mẹ.
Em sống với bố mẹ.
I live with my parents.
So it's completely normal, okay?
As long as we still support the family,
and we still contribute to the family.
So if you live separately,
or if you live on your own,
we can say, Em sống một mình.
Em sống một mình.
Em sống một mình.
Or Anh sống một mình.
Anh sống một mình.
So if you want to know where the other person lives,
we can ask, Anh sống ở đâu?
Anh sống ở đâu?
Anh sống ở đâu?
Or Em sống ở đâu?
That means, where do you live?
And we can answer,
Anh sống ở quận Hàn Kiếm.
Anh sống ở quận Hàn Kiếm.
Or Em sống ở quận Hàn Kiếm.
That means, I live in Hàn Kiếm district.
Em có bạn trai chưa?
Do you have a boyfriend?
When making friends, it's easier for you to know
whether the other person is in the relationship or not, right?
Even though you don't really care,
or it's not something that you really want to know,
but it's easier for you to,
how to say, to keep distance,
or to get closer to the person
if you know whether they are in a relationship.
So in this situation, we say,
Anh có bạn gái chưa?
Anh có bạn gái chưa?
That means, do you have a girlfriend?
Or Em có bạn trai chưa?
Em có bạn trai chưa?
Em có bạn trai chưa?
That means, do you have a boyfriend?
This is very common and very normal.
So don't worry.
Bình thường em thích làm gì?
What do you do in your free time?
Another question that we usually use
to know the other person's hobbies
or what they do in their free time,
we say,
Bình thường em thích làm gì?
Bình thường em thích làm gì?
Bình thường em thích làm gì?
That means, what do you do in your free time?
Or what do you do for fun?
Bình thường em thích làm gì?
Or Bình thường anh thích làm gì?
To answer this question, we can say,
Em thích xem phim?
Em thích xem phim?
Or Anh thích xem phim?
Anh thích đi du lịch
Em thích nghe nhạc
Em thích nấu ăn
Anh thích chơi điện tử
Em thích trang trí nhà cửa
Em có giá lô không?
Alright, next if you want to ask someone's social media
or how to contact with them,
we can say,
Em có giá lô không?
In Vietnam we use giá lô
Em có giá lô không?
Anh có Facebook không?
Do you have Facebook?
So giá lô and Facebook are commonly used in Vietnam
and maybe they're the most common channel social media to use in Vietnam
Cuối tuần này em dành không?
Are you free this weekend?
Since you've been talking to each other for some time
and you want to ask the other person out on a date,
not really on a date, but just hang out,
we say,
Cuối tuần em dành không?
Cuối tuần em dành không?
Cuối tuần em dành không?
means, are you free this weekend?
Cuối tuần em dành không?
or are you free this weekend?
Cuối tuần em dành không?
Cuối tuần anh dành không?
or if you want to meet this person immediately tomorrow,
we can say,
Ngày mai em dành không?
Ngày mai em dành không?
Ngày mai em dành không?
that means, are you free tomorrow?
Hôm nào em dành, anh mời em uống cà phê nhé?
Would you like to go out for a coffee one day?
Another way to ask someone out is,
Hôm nào em dành, anh mời em đi uống cà phê nhé?
Hôm nào em dành, anh mời em đi uống cà phê nhé?
Hôm nào em dành, anh mời em đi uống cà phê nhé?
that means, when you're free, let's have a coffee one day.
Hôm nào em dành, anh mời em đi uống cà phê nhé?
Another question, for example, if the other person says that they like watching movies in their free time,
we can say,
Hôm nào đi xem phim nhé?
Hôm nào đi xem phim nhớ?
Hôm nào đi xem phim nhớ?
Hôm nào đi xem phim nhé?
I'd love to.
Right, so those are some very common questions that we can use to make friends or to have a conversation with someone.
