Most Useful Demonstrative Adjectives in Vietnamese

In this video today, we're going to talk about some demonstratives

that you can use to say “this is” and “that is”.

But in Vietnamese it's super, super easy

because you only need to remember one word

and the tones will be different a little bit

but basically this is like the main word, the key word.

0:44 One thing I'd like to notice is we don't have plural

and singular in demonstratives in Vietnamese.

The main thing is because we only have like one word

to represent for plural nouns.

So that's the reason why when you say “this is” or “that is” in plural

you don't have to say “these are” or “those are”.

You don't have to change them like that.

But we actually use them for both plural and singular.

1:14 First, I'd like to talk about “this is”.

So in Vietnamese, the word that I mentioned before is

Đây là

ok?

Đây là means “this is” or “it's”

Đây là

So đây means “here”, okay?

And là means “to be” verb

and we don't have to conjugate the verb

we just use là for every pronouns, okay?

đây là

Alright, so in sentence if you want to say like

“This is my house”, we can say

Đây là nhà tôi

ok?

Đây là nhà tôi

Đây là phòng tôi

ok?

Đây là phòng tôi means “This is my room”

Đây là cái gối của tôi

Đây là cái gối của tôi means “This is my pillow”

Đây là lớp học tiếng Việt của Vietnamese 101

Đây là lớp học tiếng Việt của Vietnamese 101 means “This is the Vietnamese class of VietnamesePod101.com”

Đây là quán cà phê yêu thích của tôi

quán cà phê means “coffee shop”

quán is “the shop”

yêu thích is “favorite” and của tôi is “my”, okay?

or “mine”, we have a video about possessive already, so let's take a look

Đây là quán cà phê yêu thích của tôi means “This is my favorite coffee shop”

or “This is the coffee shop that I like”, okay?

Đây là quán cà phê yêu thích của tôi

Aside from đây là, there is another word that you can actually use which means “this is” also

so in Vietnamese we say

cái này là

Okay?

This one actually literally means “this is” and đây là means “here is”, okay?

cái này là

Alright, so now let's take a look at some examples

Cái này là quần áo mùa đông của tôi

quần áo mùa đông means “winter clothes”

and của tôi means “my”

Cái này là quần áo mùa đông của tôi means “These are my winter clothes”, okay?

Here you see that even though we're using “these are”, but we don't change the words

we don't change đây là or cái này là to plural

we actually use the same words, okay?

so don't be confused and just take it easy

Đây là quần áo mùa đông của tôi or Cái này là quần áo mùa đông của tôi, okay?

Another example

Cái này là bộ sưu tập tem của tôi

We have a new word: bộ sưu tập means “collection”

tem means “stamp”

Cái này là bộ sưu tập tem của tôi means “This is my stamp collection”

Okay, so you will see that we actually use cái này là and đây là pretty much the same

for both plural and singular, okay?

Now let's take a look at some examples of “that is"

For “that is" in Vietnamese, if we say đây là for “this is”, we can actually use đấy là for “that is"

so just dấu sắc, okay?

đấy là

Okay, does it sound similar?

đây là and đấy là

đây là- đấy là

Đấy là bố tôi

Đấy là bố tôi means “That is my father” or “That is my dad”

Đấy là mẹ tôi

Đấy là mẹ tôi means “That is my mom”, “That is my mother”

but if you want to say “They are my parents” we say

Đấy là bố mẹ tôi

ok?

Đấy là bố mẹ tôi

so we can use both singular and plural

Đấy là bố mẹ tôi

Alright, another word for đấy là

we also can use kia là

kia là

ok?

Kia

kia means “over there”

kia là means “that is" or “those are” or stuff like that

just for something that is far away from you that you cannot touch, okay?

or maybe you cannot see as well

Kia là sở thú

Ok?

Kia là sở thú means “That is the zoo”

Kia là sở thú

sở thú is “the zoo"

Kia là công ty tôi

Kia là công ty tôi means “That is my company”, or “That is my office”

and when you are passing by you can say

Kia là công ty tôi

Another one is rạp chiếu phim

rạp chiếu phim means “cinema”, “the cinema” or “the theater”

so if you want to say like “That is the cinema”

you can say

Kia là rạp chiếu phim

That's it for today, very very easy, right?

so now let's summarize everything that we mentioned today

đây là

đây là for “here is” or “this is”

đấy là

đấy là means ”that is", okay?

aside from đây là and đấy là

we also have

cái này là

Ok?

And

kia là

Alright, so only 4 words today but the main word we have to remember is đây and đấy, ok?

and remember that no singular, no plural at all

we can use for any words

and that's it for today
