INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com. This is Beginner Season 1 Lesson 4 - Has the Vietnamese Airline Lost Your Luggage? Becky here.
Huyen: Xin chào. I'm Huyen.
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use adjectives and noun phrases to describe an object. The conversation takes place at the airport.
Huyen: It's between Nam and Bình.
Becky: The speakers are strangers, so they'll be using formal Vietnamese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Becky: Listen to the conversation one time slowly.
Becky: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Nam: Hi, I would like to report lost luggage.
Bình: Which flight were you on?
Nam: Flight VN234, departing at 9.30 this morning from Ha Noi to Sai Gon.
Bình: What is your lost luggage?
Nam: A black, rectangular suitcase, with a size of 60x45x30. On the front side there's a name tag on which my name, Trần Văn Nam, and my phone number were written.
Bình: Please wait a minute. We will check right away.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: In the dialogue, Nam says his flight is to Sai Gon. Did he mean Ho Chi Minh city?
Huyen: He did. Sai Gon is the old name of Ho Chi Minh city which is in Southern Vietnam.
Becky: I see. I know Ho Chi Minh city is named after the first president of Vietnam. But what is the origin of the name Sai Gon?
Huyen: Well.. there are different stories about the origin of the name Sai Gon. One of the most well-known theories says that "Sài Gòn" is a Chinese-derived Vietnamese word.
Becky: Oh, I’ve heard that too. That theory says the name comes from the word for “kaptok tree” or “silk-cotton tree” right?
Huyen: That’s right. So Sài Gòn may refer to the many kapok trees that were once planted around the city a long time ago.
Becky: That’s interesting! Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Huyen: khai báo
Becky: meaning "to report” or “to declare." You can use this verb to make an official statement, especially when it’s related to legal procedures.
Hyuen: That’s right. In the dialogue, Nam used it when he said tôi muốn khai báo hành lý bị thất lạc.
Becky: Meaning “I would like to report lost luggage.”
Huyen: Khai báo is formal and only used in a conversation with a person in charge when you have to complete certain procedures. In daily conversation, khai is more commonly used, as in khai hải quan.
Becky: “to declare at customs.”
Huyen: khai tạm trú
Becky: “to report temporary residency.”Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson you'll learn how to report and claim lost luggage at the airport. When you report a missing item, the key is to describe it well, and adjectives will be the key in that situation.
Huyen: So let’s focus on some adjectives and use them to report a missing item.
Becky: In Vietnamese, adjectives follow the noun, as we see in the dialogue with the adjective referring to color.
Huyen: Right, for example.. màu đen which means "a black something.”
Becky: And not only colors, we also have the adjective referring to the shape of the object, for example..
Huyen: hình chữ nhật, which means "rectangular."
Becky: In Vietnamese, these adjectives are called descriptive adjectives.
Huyen: And you can use them after a noun. And here’s a question for you, Becky. When you have to use two adjectives, do you know the rule to choose which one goes first?
Becky: You put the shorter one first, and then the longer one, right?
Huyen: That’s right. The shorter one goes first.
Becky: Following this rule, let’s order the adjectives correctly. Let’s say you're missing a black rectangular bag.
Huyen: Here, you’ll need two adjectives. First, màu đen, “black,” and hình chữ nhật, “rectangular.”
Becky: That means I need to say “black” first, right?
Huyen: That’s right. So, you can say một va li màu đen hình chữ nhật
Becky: “a black rectangular suitcase”
Huyen: And here I added và, the word meaning “and,” to connect the two adjectives.
Becky: Okay. And now let’s get into something a bit more complicated, noun classifiers. Most nouns in Vietnamese need a classifier. A classifier is also called a counter word, and often accompanies a noun to classify its type. Let's hear the three most common noun classifier groups in Vietnamese. What’s the first group?
Huyen: cái and chiếc, which is for objects in general.
Becky: Using it you can say “a shirt”, for example.
Huyen: Which is cái áo. Cái is the classifier and áo is “shirt.” Cái áo
Becky: And there’s the one for animals, too, right?
Huyen: That’s right. con as in con gà.
Becky: “a chicken.”
Huyen: And finally, we have cuốn and quyển for books, notebooks, or any collection of papers, as in cuốn sách “a book.”
Becky: And when you describe things, you need to make sure that you use the right noun classifiers. For example, if you want to say “A beautiful pink dress...”
Huyen: You can say.. cái váy đẹp màu hồng. cái váy means "a dress" with the noun classifier cái, then we have đẹp, the shorter adjective meaning “beautiful” and màu hồng, the longer adjective meaning “pink.”

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Huyen: Cảm ơn các bạn.
