INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com. This is Beginner Season 1 Lesson 25 - Making a Delicious Vietnamese Dish. Becky Here.
Huyen: Xin Chào. I'm Huyen.
Becky: In this final lesson of the series, you’ll learn how to use the imperative form and transitional words to describe a process. The conversation takes place at a deli counter.
Huyen: It's between Linh and Anne.
Becky: The speakers are strangers, but Vietnamese people don’t use formal language when shopping for food in their neighborhood, so they’ll be using general Vietnamese which is not so formal or informal. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Becky: Listen to the conversation one time slowly.

Linh: I'll teach you how to make pork and shrimp fresh spring rolls.
Anne: Sounds great. I like those very much.
Linh: First, put some rice paper on a plate, then add boiled pork, boiled shrimp, fried egg, rice noodle and herbs in the middle, arrange them neatly and start rolling the rice paper by hand.
: After that, place the finished roll on another plate and continue with the remaining rice papers.
: Wanna try rolling?
Anne: Like this, right?
Linh: Right. Your roll looks great.
Anne: This is very interesting.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: Huyen, what does a typical Vietnamese meal consist of?
Huyen: A typical Vietnamese meal consists of rice, one main dish, and one type of vegetable and soup.
Becky: What would be a typical main dish?
Huyen: Usually it will be meat or seafood, often fried, stir-fried, or braised. Vegetables can be boiled, stir-fried or cooked in the form of a soup, called canh in Vietnamese.
Becky: I’ve heard that fish sauce is an indispensable part of Vietnamese cuisine.
Huyen: That’s true. The sauce is typically mixed with chilli, pepper, minced garlic, and lemon juice or vinegar.
Becky: There is also the very interesting fact that Vietnamese people eat rice from their own bowl but usually share other foods, presented on a large tray.
Huyen: Right. We call such a tray a mâm. Each person picks up the food they want to eat from the tray and puts it in their own bowl.
Becky: So keep that in mind, listeners! Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Huyen: tiếp tục
Becky: which means “to continue.”
Huyen: You can add tiếp tục after a noun or a verb phrase. It means “to continue something” or “to continue doing something.”
Becky: You can use this word to express a continuing action or to say that something continues to happen for a long time without stopping and is causing annoyance.
Huyen: Right. In this case we often use the phrase lại tiếp tục, which means “continue again.” For example, you can say.. Cô ấy tiếp tục chương trình học sau khi nghỉ 3 tháng.
Becky: which means “She’s continuing the study program after a 3-month holiday.” Okay, what's the next word?
Huyen: thử
Becky: which in this lesson means “to try,” as in “to do something as a test or a trial.”
Huyen: You can put the main verb before or after thử.
Becky: So, the sentence structure is...
Huyen: thử….verb phrase or verb...thử…. and the object.
Becky: Altogether, it means “try doing something.” Huyen, can you give us an example using this word?
Huyen: Sure. For example, you can say.. Tôi thử làm bánh và đã thành công.
Becky: which means “I tried making a cake and succeeded.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the imperative form and transitional words to describe a process.
Huyen: To describe a process of doing something, in Vietnamese we use imperatives and transitional words to connect the steps of certain processes.
Becky: Huyen, how we can form imperatives in Vietnamese?
Huyen: To put a verb into the imperative form, all you need to do is use the stem of the verb. After that, you can use a noun or a noun phrase. Adverbs can follow the verb too, but are optional.
Becky: So, the grammar structure is a verb stem and an object, and then you can also add an adverb.
Huyen: Right. Transitional words are also used to describe a process. You need to put them before the main verb.
Becky: Can you give us examples of transitional words?
Huyen: Sure. Đầu tiên and trước tiên
Becky: which mean “at first” and “firstly” respectively.
Huyen: Rồi
Becky: “then”
Huyen: Sau đó
Becky: “after that,” “then”
Huyen: Sau
Becky: “after,” “later”
Huyen: Cuối cùng
Becky: “finally.” Listeners, you can find more transitional words in the lesson notes. Ok, to wrap up this lesson, can you give us some sample sentences?
Huyen: Sure. Đầu tiên cho bột vào cốc, rót nước sôi vào rồi khuấy đều.
Becky: This sentence means “First, put powder into the cup, pour in boiled water, then stir well.”
Huyen: Trước tiên gội sạch tóc, lau khô, sau đó bôi dưỡng và mát xa nhẹ nhàng.
Becky: which means “First, wash your hair clean, towel dry, and after that apply the treatment gel and massage gently.”
Huyen: Rửa đĩa nhỏ trước, sau đó rửa đĩa to và cuối cùng xếp chúng lên giá.
Becky: “Wash the small dishes first, then wash the big ones, and finally put them on the shelf.”

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson and for this series. We hope you’ve enjoyed it and found it useful. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you in another series! Bye!
Huyen: Cảm ơn các bạn.
