INTRODUCTION
Becky: Hi everyone, and welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com. This is Beginner Season 1 Lesson 12 - Is There a Problem with Your Vietnamese Meal? Becky here.
Huyen: Xin chào. I'm Huyen.
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about a different option from the one previously mentioned. The conversation takes place at a restaurant.
Huyen: It's between An and Minh, the waiter.
Becky: The speakers are strangers, so they will be using formal Vietnamese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Minh: Gỏi cuốn của chị đây ạ.
An: Xin lỗi, tôi không gọi gỏi cuốn.
Minh: Không phải chị gọi 1 (một) đĩa gỏi cuốn tôm thịt ạ?
An: Không, tôi gọi nem rán, chứ không phải gỏi cuốn.
Minh: Thành thật xin lỗi chị về sự nhầm lẫn này. Tôi sẽ đổi món lại ạ.
An: Làm ơn nhanh một chút được không? Tôi đang vội.
Minh: Vâng, tôi mang ra ngay đây ạ. Một lần nữa thành thật xin lỗi chị.
An: Không sao.
Becky: Listen to the conversation one time slowly.
Minh: Gỏi cuốn của chị đây ạ.
An: Xin lỗi, tôi không gọi gỏi cuốn.
Minh: Không phải chị gọi 1 (một) đĩa gỏi cuốn tôm thịt ạ?
An: Không, tôi gọi nem rán, chứ không phải gỏi cuốn.
Minh: Thành thật xin lỗi chị về sự nhầm lẫn này. Tôi sẽ đổi món lại ạ.
An: Làm ơn nhanh một chút được không? Tôi đang vội.
Minh: Vâng, tôi mang ra ngay đây ạ. Một lần nữa thành thật xin lỗi chị.
An: Không sao.
Becky: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Minh: Here are your spring rolls.
An: Sorry, I didn’t order fresh spring rolls.
Minh: Didn't you order a plate of pork and shrimp fresh spring rolls?
An: No, I ordered fried spring rolls, not fresh ones.
Minh: I'm terribly sorry for this mistake. I'll change it right away.
An: Please be quick. I'm in a hurry.
Minh: Yes, I'll bring it here right away. Once again, I'm really sorry.
An: No problem.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: When thinking of Vietnamese spring rolls, I think Vietnamese people like fried spring rolls because they’re a more traditional food in Vietnam than fresh spring rolls.
Huyen: That’s right. For Vietnamese people, fried spring rolls are the main dish at traditional feasts, family reunion parties, and end-of-year and new year parties.
Becky: If you’re not familiar with fried spring rolls, they include pork, minced carrots, bean sprouts, wood ear, and other ingredients wrapped inside rice paper.
Huyen: That’s right. This roll is then fried in oil until it turns brown-yellow. When it’s cooked, it becomes very crispy and tastes great with sweet and sour sauce and raw vegetables.
Becky: If you haven’t had them before, you must try them. You’ll love them! Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Huyen: gọi
Becky: which means “to order,” for example food in a restaurant. To ask “Have you ordered something?” you can say…
Huyen: Đã gọi món gì chưa? And listeners, if the other person is older, please add a pronoun at the beginning of the question.
Becky: You can add the second person pronoun “you” at the beginning, but in an appropriate form to address the other speaker politely. For example, if you are asking an older man, you can say…
Huyen: Anh đã gọi món gì chưa? You need to add Anh.
Becky: And if you are asking an older woman…
Huyen: Add Chị and say Chị đã gọi món gì chưa?
Becky: Okay, what's the next phrase?
Huyen: thành thật xin lỗi
Becky: which means “I'm terribly sorry.”
Huyen: thành thật means “sincere” and xin lỗi means “sorry.” hành thật xin lỗi is a very polite phrase, so you can use it in any circumstance when you want to say sorry to someone.
Becky: Can we use it in daily conversation?
Huyen: Sure. You can find it in daily conversation and in written texts.
Becky: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the phrase…
Huyen: chứ không phải
Becky: It means “rather than” and you can use it to talk about an opinion that is different from another one previously mentioned.
Huyen: To use this pattern, first you need to say the correct information, then chứ không phải, and finish it with the wrong information. It’s something like ‘A rather than B.’
Becky: “Something correct rather than something incorrect.” What about the sentence structure?
Huyen: First, you can make a full sentence with a subject, a verb, and fact A. Then add chứ không phải then fact B.
Becky: So it’s like the English pattern saying “It’s A, not B,” or “A rather than B.”
Huyen: That’s right. The facts here can only be a noun, or a verb and noun as a set.
Becky: Okay, can you give us an example? Let’s pick a simple one. How can we say.. “I’m a teacher, not a doctor”?
Huyen: Tôi là giáo viên, chứ không phải bác sĩ.
Becky: It literally means “I’m a teacher, not a doctor.” Here we have a very important rule. If in a sentence two clauses have the same subject and verb, the verb should not be repeated in the second clause. If we made a full sentence, it would be..
Huyen: Tôi là giáo viên, chứ không phải là bác sĩ.
Becky: which means “I’m a teacher, I’m not a doctor.”
Huyen: But it’s better to not say the second là and just say Tôi là giáo viên, chứ không phải bác sĩ.
Becky: “I’m a teacher, not a doctor.” Okay. Huyen, can you give one more example?
Huyen: Anh ấy đang sửa máy tính, chứ không phải chơi game.
Becky: “He is repairing the computer rather than playing a computer game.”
Huyen: In this sample sentence, the second clause has a different verb from the first clause, so the second verb plus the noun chơi game, “play a computer game,” is added after chứ không phải. Anh ấy đang sửa máy tính, chứ không phải chơi game.
Becky: The two actions indicated by verb phrase 1 and verb phrase 2 are often similar at first glance and are easily confused. The verbs in this case are usually in the present continuous tense. For example…
Huyen: Lan đang nghiên cứu, chứ không phải xem tin tức.
Becky: “Lan is doing research rather than reading news”

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Huyen: Cảm ơn các bạn.
