Michael: At VietnamesePod101.com, we hear these questions often. Now, imagine this
scenario: Emma Nguyễn is meeting another college student, Long Lương, for the first time. On hearing her speak Vietnamese, this college student asks,
"Where did you learn Vietnamese?"
Long Lương: Bạn học tiếng Việt ở đâu?

Michael: belongs to the Mon-Khmer branch of the Austro-Asiatic family of languages. Did you know that 76 million people speak this language, making it the 16th most-spoken language in the world, and 75 million people speak this language in Vietnam alone? Outside of Vietnam, it is also spoken in many countries worldwide!

Michael: In this lesson, we have learned that Vietnamese is spoken by a large number of people, and while the majority of them are located in Vietnam, Vietnamese speakers can be found all around the world!

Michael: There are several dialects spoken in Vietnam, but the three major ones are
Nguyet : Hanoi,
Michael: which is spoken in Northern Vietnam,

Michael: which is spoken in Mid-Central Vietnam, and

Michael: which is used in the Southern part of the country. These dialects differ in their sound system, vocabulary, and grammar.

Michael: One of the reasons that Vietnamese is spoken in many countries around the world are the overseas Vietnamese, or
Nguyet: Người Việt hải ngoại.
Michael: About 4.5 million Vietnamese became part of this diaspora, leaving the country in 1975. Over half of these people live in the United States today. The term "Overseas Vietnamese" is not a popular one and has since been replaced by the term that means "ethnic Vietnamese who live in foreign countries." It's the word
