Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 47 - Getting Medical Assistance in Southern Vietnam.
In today’s lesson, we’ll introduce you to some phrases useful in case you need medical assistance. When traveling sometimes, the body takes a little time to adjust and the immune system is no different. So today, we’ll cover a phrase to get you medical assistance. We’ll start with the phrase, "I need a doctor." In Vietnamese, “I need a doctor” is Tôi cần bác sỹ.

Let’s break this down by syllable: Tôi cần bác sỹ.
Once again, Tôi cần bác sỹ.
We know the first word, tôi, means "I" and is flat.

The second word, cần, cần means "need" and is the falling tone.

Let’s hear these two words together, tôi cần.

This is followed by the word, bác sỹ, bác sỹ which means "doctor."
Bác is the rising tone and sỹ is the falling-rising tone.
So once again, bác sỹ.

All together, we have Tôi cần bác sỹ. Literally, this means "I need a doctor."
Another useful phrase is “I need a pharmacy.” To say this, Tôi cần tiệm mua thuốc.

Once again, Tôi cần tiệm mua thuốc.
We know the first word, tôi, means “I” and is flat.
As you can see, the first two words in this phrase are the same as the previous phrase, tôi cần.

Tiệm is flat and means “store.”

Literally, this means “I need a store to buy medicine,” but we use it as the English equivalent for “I need a pharmacy.”
To ask someone to take you to the doctor, you can say Xin đưa tôi đi bác sĩ.

Let’s break this down by syllable: Xin đưa tôi đi bác sĩ.
Once again, Xin đưa tôi đi bác sĩ.
We’ve covered the first word, xin, before. It means “please.”
