Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 37 - Hotel in Southern Vietnam 3 - Do You Have Power Converters?
Today’s lesson is for all you travelers out there who travel with electrical appliances. So you made it to Vietnam, but you neglected to bring a power converter with you. In today’s phrase, we’ll look at asking if a store has a particular item and we'll start with power converters.
In Vietnamese "Do you have a power converter?" is Có máy biến áp không?
Có máy biến áp không?
Let’s bring it down by syllable: Có máy biến áp không?
Let’s hear it again, Có máy biến áp không?
The word pair có - không begins and ends the sentence and means "do you have" or "is there." Có is the rising tone and không is the flat tone.
So again, có - không.
có - không
Có is followed by máy biến áp, which is Vietnamese for "power converter."
The first two words, máy biến, are the rising tone.
máy biến

And áp is the falling tone, áp.
áp
So all together, we have Có máy biến áp không? Literally, this means "Do you have a power converter?"
Now to ask for a different item, we can just replace the word for power converter with any other word and the phrase works just fine. Let's try bản đồ, which is “map” in Vietnamese.
Do you have a map?” is Có bản đồ không?
Có bản đồ không?
The only thing that changes is the thing that you’re looking for. In this case, it’s bản đồ.
Bản is falling-rising and đồ falls gradually.

To ask for someone’s business card, you can say Có danh thiếp không?
Có danh thiếp không?

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so chúc may mắn, this means “good luck” in Vietnamese.
Okay, here we go!
