Lesson focus

Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 10 - Apologies in Southern Vietnamese.
In today’s lesson, we’ll cover phrases used for apologizing. Now, as you haven’t quite mastered Vietnamese, it’s probably very prudent to go over the phrases for apologizing as it just might come in handy. We’ll start with Xin lỗi, which means “Sorry.”
So again, Xin lỗi.
Let’s break it down by syllable: Xin lỗi.
And hear it again, Xin lỗi.
This entire phrase is said in the level tone. The first word, xin, means "please," followed by lỗi, which means "mistake." Literally, this translates to "please mistake," but we use it as the English equivalent for "sorry." You can use this phrase in any type of situation you feel the need to express regret.
In the case that someone uses this expression towards you, you can respond with Không sau which is the English equivalent of "don’t worry" or “never mind.”
So let’s practice again, Không sau.
Không sau
The first word, không, should sound familiar. It means “no” and it’s the same word used in "You're welcome." Không có gì. Remember, không is said with no tone. Không is followed by the Vietnamese word for “problem,” sau.
sau
So putting these phrases together, we have Không sau.
Không sau
Let’s hear it again, Không sau.
Many times when people say Xin lỗi, they will bow at the same time or they will gesture by putting their hands and fingers together close to their chest.

Outro

Okay, to close out today’s lesson, we'd like for you to practice what you've just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so, chúc may mắn, this means “good luck” in Vietnamese.
Okay, here we go!
