INTRODUCTION
John: Slang Used as Nouns, part 2
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com. I'm John.
Nguyet: And I'm Nguyet!
John: This is Must-Know Vietnamese Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 21. In this lesson, you'll learn more slang used as nouns.
John: These nouns are also used to refer to something other than their real meanings.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Nguyet: GATO
Nguyet: cơm
Nguyet: phượt thủ
Nguyet: FA
John: Nguyet, what's our first expression?
Nguyet: GATO
John: literally meaning "to be bursting with envy or jealousy."
Nguyet: GATO
John: is an abbreviation for
Nguyet: Ghen Ăn Tức Ở .
John: But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to envy."
Nguyet: [SLOW] GATO [NORMAL] GATO
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Nguyet: GATO
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to say "envy." It's pronounced as "gateaux" in French. To put it in context: "Are you eating GATO (gateaux) that her dress looked better than yours at the party?" This means "Are you bursting with envy that her dress looked better than yours at the party?"
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Nguyet: [NORMAL] Cô ấy vừa chê váy của cậu hả ? Cô ấy chỉ GATO thôi. Đừng bận tâm [SLOW] Cô ấy vừa chê váy của cậu hả ? Cô ấy chỉ GATO thôi. Đừng bận tâm

Nguyet: [NORMAL] Cô ấy vừa chê váy của cậu hả ? Cô ấy chỉ GATO thôi. Đừng bận tâm
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Nguyet: cơm
John: literally meaning "rice." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "wife."
Nguyet: [SLOW] cơm [NORMAL] cơm
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Nguyet: cơm
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to say "wife" because rice is the main dish Vietnamese people eat every day. Meanwhile phở ("noodle") is something extra, something people want to eat when they want to take a break from eating rice — and often refers to a mistress.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Nguyet: [NORMAL] Vợ là cơm. Cơm nhà vẫn là ngon nhất. [SLOW] Vợ là cơm. Cơm nhà vẫn là ngon nhất.
John: "Wife is rice. Home cooked dishes are the best."
Nguyet: [NORMAL] Vợ là cơm. Cơm nhà vẫn là ngon nhất.
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
