| the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Vietnamese. In today's video, I'm going to share |
| with you how to give advice or give suggestions to someone in Vietnam. There should be some |
| modal verbs as well, but in Vietnamese we don't really have those modal verbs like in English, |
| but it's gonna be easier, so let's find out what we got today. |
| The first one, the iconic one that we usually use when giving someone's advice |
| that they should do something, so in Vietnamese we say |
| nên, and the opposite is không nên. Okay, now in sentence |
| bạn nên dậy sớm hơn. It means you should get up earlier. |
| And bạn không nên thức khuya. It means you should not stay up late. |
| bạn không nên ăn nhiều rau và trái cây hơn. That means you should eat more fruits and |
| vegetables, or you should eat more vegetables and fruit, okay? And bạn không nên ăn thức ăn |
| đóng hộp. It means like you should not eat canned food. Okay, so the first one we got |
| nên and không nên. Let's talk about the second one. |
| It's a very nice way to give someone a suggestion or to recommend someone to do something. Instead |
| of saying you should, it's very direct, right? We say hay là is more like a suggestion. Maybe you |
| can do something, okay? So in sentence, it means what about you try being a vegetarian, okay? |
| If you listen closely, you'll see that when you say hay là and xem sao, it sounds softer |
| and the other person doesn't feel like they're being pushed. So it's a very nice way to give |
| someone suggestions, but not making them feel that they have to do that, okay? Hay là xem sao. |
| Another example, hay là ngày mai em thử hỏi xếp xem sao? What about you try to ask our manager |
| tomorrow? Hay là ngày mai em thử hỏi xếp xem sao? In the sentence, we also hear hay là thử, |
| right? So thử is also a nice way to suggest someone doing something. For example, thử tập thể dục đi. |
| Thử tập thể dục đi. It means try exercise. Another one, thử đạp xe đi. |
| Try cycling. |
| Now next one, if you want to make the suggestion into a higher level, which is a little bit stronger |
| and they must do something or they have to do something, in Vietnamese we say phải. |
| So phải here means must or have to do something. In sentence, anh phải dùng cái máy chạy bộ này |
| đi. |
| So when we say anh phải dùng cái máy chạy bộ này đi, that means like you're trying to advertise |
| the treadmill and it's a really good one, you must try it, something like that. So anh phải dùng cái |
| máy chạy bộ này đi. |
| That means like you must try this dish. Oh my god, it's so good. |
| Okay, so phải. Next one, tại sao không? |
| Tại sao không? means why not and in sentence. |
| Why don't you reduce sugar in your diet? |
| Tại sao anh không giảm bớt đường trong chế độ ăn uống? It's like why why not? Why don't you do something? |
| Okay, so tại sao không is to question someone why they don't do something and a soft way to |
| give a suggestion. Another example, tại sao chúng ta không ra ngoài đi dạo cùng nhau nhỉ? |
| Why don't we go out for a walk? |
| Another one, nếu tôi là bạn thì. |
| Nếu tôi là bạn thì is used when you want to put yourself into someone's shoes |
| and to really understand their situation. So in this situation we can say nếu tôi là bạn |
| In sentence, nếu tôi là bạn thì tôi sẽ gọi cho anh ấy. |
| If I were you, I would call him. Or, nếu tôi là bạn thì tôi sẽ không mua cái váy này. |
| Nếu tôi là bạn thì tôi sẽ không mua cái váy này. If I were you, I wouldn't buy this dress. |
| So if you notice that it's very easy for people to use conditional sentences in Vietnamese right |
| because we don't have different tenses but instead we only got đã, đang and sẽ for the past, |
| the present and the future, right? So nếu tôi là bạn thì tôi sẽ không mua chiếc váy này. |
| Last one, tốt nhất là |
| is best if or something. |
| Đừng liên lạc với tôi nữa. |
| It's best if you don't contact me again. |
