There are some words in Vietnamese that we can just put before or after a word
to change the meaning of the word or to change the word form.
We call tiền tố and hậu tố.
In this video today, I'm going to introduce to you some prefixation and suffixations in Vietnamese
so that you know how to use them in sentences.

And let's get started.
First one, let's talk about tiền tố, prefixation.
The first word that I'm going to introduce to you is nhà.
Nhà.
What does it mean? Do you remember?
Nhà.
It means house, right?
But in this situation, it means a person doing something
or a person specializes in some specific field.
For example,
Văn means literature.
So nhà văn means a writer or an author.
Nhà văn, a person who writes.
Nhà văn, okay?
So nhà is a tiền tố.
For example,
Nguyễn Nhật Ánh is a very famous writer in Vietnam.
Or Nguyễn Nhật Ánh is a very famous Vietnamese writer.
Nhoa học means science.
So nhà khoa học means scientist.
Nhà khoa học, the person who does or who works in science.
That means Phạm Tuân is a pilot, a scientist of Vietnam.
Also, we got the word phi, phi công.
Phi here means to fly.
So when we put phi before a word,
it means something related to flying.
For example, phi công is a pilot.
Công is like an employee, phi công.
Another one is phi tiêu, phi tiêu.
Next one, we got
Kinh tế means economy and
nhà kinh tế means economist.
Các nhà kinh tế đã giữ báo suy thoái ở Việt Nam.
That means economists have forecast a recession in Vietnam.
Suy thoái means a recession.
And the last one, we got
means a journalist.
Rất nhiều nhà báo hiện nay muốn câu view bằng cách viết về scandal.
That means a lot of writers nowadays want to get better views by writing about scandals.
In Vietnamese, we don't really say scandal.
We say skang dan, skang dan, skang dan.
That is a Vietnamese accent.
Alright, a second prefixation that I want to introduce to you is
So we use sư and việc before the verb to turn the word into a noun.
For example,
Phát triển is developed and
sự phát triển is the development.
Next one, we got
Thay đổi means change and
sự thay đổi means a change.
For example,
Next one, we got
Sự vắng mặt means absence.
Sự vắng mặt của cô ấy là một thiếu sót lớn.
Sự chuẩn bị
Preparation
Chúng tôi rất vui với sự chuẩn bị chu đáo của các bạn.
We're very happy with your careful preparation.
Việc đi lại
Đi lại means to travel or to commute.
Việc đi lại is like transportation.
Việc đi lại hay giao thông ở Việt Nam rất hỗn loạn.
Sự tiếp xúc
means like communicating or contacting.
Tiếp xúc means like in contact with someone.
Sự tiếp xúc, communicating.
For example,
Sự tiếp xúc với những người thành công là một điều cần thiết.
It means the contacting with successful people is a necessary thing.
Việc giới thiệu
Giới thiệu này đã đem lại hiệu quả lớn.
It means this introduction has had a great effect.
Việc kiểm tra
Việc kiểm tra means control or examination in sentence.
Việc kiểm tra cần phải thực hiện rất sát sao.
means the examination has to be done very closely.
Việc tổ chức
Tổ chức means organization.
Việc tổ chức hội nghị này cần phải được tính toán kỹ lưỡng.
Cuộc hợp
For example,
Cuộc hợp is a meeting.
Cuộc nói chuyện is a conversation.
Cuộc vui is an amusement.
In Vietnamese we usually say
Cuộc vui nào cũng đến hồi kết.
It means every amusement or every party will come to an end.
Cuộc vui nào cũng đến hồi kết.
Cuộc sống is life.
Cuộc sống is like a compound word.
Cuộc sống is life.
Cuộc ly hôn is a divorce.
Cuộc tình is a love.
Cuộc gặp gỡ is a meeting.
Chưởng and Cả
Chưởng and Cả are words that indicate a person who is in charge or who leads something or someone or a department.
Hiệu trưởng is the school principal.
Bộ trưởng is the minister.
Anh Cả is the first child.
Chị Cả is the first daughter.
Nhóm trưởng is the team leader.
Viên is a member of an organization.
Viên here means a member of an organization or like a group of people.
For example, we got chuyên viên.
Chuyên viên is like a specialist, someone specializing in some specific fields.
Another one we got nhân viên.
Nhân viên is like an employee or like a staff member.
Next one we got đảng viên.
Đảng viên is like a party member.
For example, my dad is a party member.
Bố tôi là đảng viên.
We got thuyền viên.
Thuyền is like a boat.
Thuyền viên means a sailor.
And the last one is not relevant but thịt viên.
Thịt viên is like a meatball.
Thịt viên is just not relevant.
