Have you ever been invited to a Vietnamese wedding and felt stuck among hundreds of people |
without even knowing where the groom and the bride are? |
If so, you might not have known that this is one of the typical things that makes a wedding in Vietnam special. |
Knowing Vietnamese culture in this case through a wedding allows you to understand and adapt to the people, |
especially when you're a foreigner living and working in Vietnam. |
Even though there are only a few steps in the whole process, |
what makes a wedding in Vietnam unforgettable is the journey of joining these processes. |
In this video today, I'm gonna share with you what these steps are, okay? |
Hello everyone, my name is Linh. Welcome back to vietnamespod101.com and let's get started. |
The first step of a wedding in Vietnam that you need to know is preparation. |
Remember that in Vietnam, a wedding is about the two families, not only the groom and the bride. |
Everybody in their families will get involved in this preparation step |
because it's everyone's responsibility to support the couple. |
So they don't have to worry at all about planning, decorating, what restaurant to reserve |
or where to book a makeup artist because there will be always a person who is willing to help you or being assigned. |
I remember when my sister got married, it felt like a festival, not a wedding. |
That was when I realized that a wedding is a family's joy and happiness. |
But it does not mean that the groom and the bride do not have to do anything. |
They will have to go to every single guest's house to send an invitation |
which takes a lot of time in order to plan the size of the wedding. |
This whole preparation process is to make sure that there is enough space and food for the guests |
and nobody is hungry after the wedding. |
The second step is obviously the wedding which is also the main phase of the event. |
Some families have two or even three partying days depending on how many guests they invited. |
I have joined a wedding with around a thousand guests which is huge and apparently costs the family a fortune. |
On the wedding day, the groom's family goes to the bride's family |
and does all the formalities needed to pick up the bride. |
And after that, they all go to the restaurants to enjoy the party |
and officially announce their marriage to everybody. |
However, the couple does not really enjoy the moment. |
They will have to go to every table and thank the guests for coming to the party. |
In Western countries, the couple actually enjoy the food at this step. |
It does not work the same way in Vietnam. |
Most of the guests are the parents' invitees. |
Walking around the hall and greeting people are ways to show the host's appreciation. |
The reason why this happens is not only because the parents have more guests than the couple |
but also Vietnamese people get married at quite a young age |
which means they are not able to afford the wedding costs. |
For this reason, there will be some imbalance between the number of the parents' guests and the couple's guests. |
Weddings in Vietnam are about everyone's happiness and that's what makes it special. |
The last step in a wedding process is to show gratitude. |
What is the appreciation to the host family? |
It could be the appreciation to the parents as well as to the people who have supported the host family. |
After the wedding, the couple usually goes back to the bride's house to have a meal with her parents. |
The groom will buy some gifts or food for the parents on this day. |
From this point onwards, he is officially a family member. |
On the other hand, the bride mostly will stay with the husband's family |
which means she is going to contribute to her husband's family as much as she does to hers. |
These days, more couples tend to live independently from the family |
and therefore they have more time for themselves to build a successful marriage. |
In conclusion, these three steps are the basic phases of a Vietnamese wedding. |
In Vietnam, we have one proverb which is |
to indicate two families that have similar culture as well as financial status |
for a couple to have a successful marriage. |
Let's move on to the next part. |
I'd like to introduce to you some of the messages that you can use to wish a couple in their wedding. |
The first one and the most common one that you can use anywhere, anytime |
and this is like the most popular sentence in Vietnam to congratulate a wedding |
which is |
Chúc mừng hạnh phúc! |
Chúc mừng means congratulations and hạnh phúc means happiness. |
So, chúc mừng hạnh phúc means like congratulations on your happiness, okay? |
Next one, this one is also very common and you can actually use in any wedding. |
Chúc anh thị hạnh phúc! |
Okay, so if chúc mừng means congratulations, chúc means wishing or to wish something, okay? |
To wish someone something. |
So, chúc anh thị hạnh phúc means wishing you guys happiness. |
Chúc anh thị hạnh phúc! |
Okay, so chúc mừng hạnh phúc! |
Next one, this is like the longer version of the second sentence which is |
Chúc anh thị trăm năm hạnh phúc! |
Trăm năm here means a hundred years. |
So, trăm năm hạnh phúc means like happy ever after or something like that. |
Wishing you guys a hundred years of happiness. |
Another sentence which is a little bit different but pretty similar to the previous ones. |
Chúc mừng hạnh phúc anh thị! |
Chúc mừng here means congratulations, right? |
Hạnh phúc means happiness. |
When the pronouns stand after the noun, |
you can understand that it's a possessive noun. |
So, chúc mừng hạnh phúc anh thị means like congratulations on your happiness, okay? |
Because anh thị stand at the end of the sentence. |
So, that is a possessive pronoun. |
Now, next one, this is like a longer version of all of these previous ones. |
Chúc mừng hạnh phúc anh thị và gia đình! |
So, not only the couple is happy but also the families, the two families are happy as well, right? |
In this case, like chúc mừng hạnh phúc anh thị và gia đình means congratulations on your happiness |
and the two families' happiness as well. |
That's it for today, some common things about Vietnamese weddings |
and also some messages that you can use to congratulate the couples. |
