In this video today, we're going to talk about all the vocabulary for the arts.

And what is your favorite art?

Let's find out in this video.

Let's see what we got.

Number one, very very easy and I think it's very common.

Vẽ tranh

That means “to paint” or “to draw”

Vẽ tranh

Vẽ - dấu ngã, so we have to bend the sound a little bit

Vẽ tranh

Màu

Màu means “color”.

So in order to paint, you need colors, right?

Để vẽ tranh chúng ta cần có màu sắc.

Màu sắc means “colors” in general.

Màu or màu sắc

Giấy

So we've got giấy “paper” in general.

And like “drawing paper” specifically, we say

giấy vẽ

Ok?

bạt vẽ

bạt vẽ means “canvas” or it's like the fabric that you use for drawing

bạt vẽ

thước vẽ

thước vẽ means “the bridge”

độ sáng

So if you want to talk about the brightness, we use độ sáng

like how bright it is or how dark it is.

độ sáng

The opposite would be

độ tối

Because tối is like the opposite of sáng

but it sounds a bit unnatural so we can use

mức độ tối

mức độ is like “the level of the darkness”

mức độ tối

Next one, if you want to talk about the brushes

we use

cọ vẽ

Ok?

Cọ is “the brush” and we can use for drawing brush or makeup brush as well

cọ vẽ

kiến trúc

kiến trúc in general is “architecture”

kiến trúc

So for example, if you want to say that “I was majored in architecture”

we say

Tôi học ngành kiến trúc

tranh sơn dầu

tranh sơn dầu also means “canvas”

is like the kind of picture where you use like oil colors to paint or to draw

sơn dầu means like “oil painting”

tranh sơn dầu - “the canvas"

thư pháp

thư pháp means “calligraphy"

thư pháp

thư pháp is very very famous in Vietnam especially during Tet holiday

because you can find like a lot of small calligraphy shops

near the first university of Vietnam which is Văn Miếu

and we have a lot of artists or we can call them masters

or in Vietnamese we call them

thầy đồ

so they would do calligraphy very nicely

so usually on the first day of Lunar New Year

we would go there to ask for a letter

a traditional Vietnamese letter

so to bring luck to us

chạm khắc means “carve", “carve" ok?

this is also something new to me

so I don't really know how to explain because I'm not good at art

Phấn- we use for “chalk”

so you can either pronounce màu or mầu is also fine

compa means “compas". This is like a borrowed word, right?

so we use this one for “contrast”

as a noun, ok?

độ tương phản- “contrast”

độ tương phản

bút sáp màu

so we use bút sáp màu for “crayon" and bút chì màu for “pencils”, ok?

or for “colored pencils”

thủ công

thủ công means “craft”

thủ công

so we can either use thủ công or nghề thủ công is like a job, “handycraft”, right?

nghề thủ công for job or something is handcrafted

we use nghề thủ công as an adjective

thủ công

sáng tạo

sáng tạo means “to create” or “creativity”

sáng tạo

so sáng tạo here in Vietnamese we can either use for a noun or for a verb

sáng tạo

for example like

Cô ấy rất sáng tạo

means like “She is very creative”, right?

Cô ấy rất sáng tạo

but if you want to say like

“I like your creativity”

we can say

Tôi thích sự sáng tạo của bạn

đánh bóng

đánh bóng means “crosshatching”

Also, nghệ thuật

nghệ thuật

nghệ thuật means “art”

nghệ sĩ

nghệ sĩ means “artists” or people who do art for a living

“Artists”- nghệ sỹ

we want to use like “artists” in general we use nghệ sỹ

however more specifically if you want to use like

họa sĩ

họa sĩ that means “a painter”

họa sĩ

or if you want to say “a singer”

we use

ca sĩ

so when you put sĩ at the end of the word

that means like people who do art

Also not very relevant but

bác sĩ

bác sĩ means “doctor”

so what else?

let me see

but also we have another word

nghệ nhân

nghệ nhân also means “artists” but it's more formal

and it's more traditional

so this word we use for like people at higher level, artists at higher level

and maybe they are very respected

or maybe they are like senior artists

so we use

nghệ nhân

trang trí

trang trí means “to decorate”

trang trí

okay

and if you want to use “decoration”

so we use

sự trang trí

but for example like if you use trang trí in sentence

that can be used or that can be understood

as a noun or an adjective or even a verb

thiết kế

thiết kế means “to design”

thiết kế

and “designer” we use

nhà thiết kế

but we don't use thiết kế sĩ ok?

nhà thiết kế

bản vẽ

bản vẽ means “a drawing”, “a drawing” ok?

a noun

bản vẽ is like a piece of art that you already finished

or that you have just already drawn or painted

bản vẽ

giá vẽ

giá vẽ means “easel”

giá vẽ

so it's like a piece of wood that you use to put your drawing on

giá vẽ

tranh điêu khắc

or you can use like

điêu khắc

điêu khắc means “engraving”

tranh điêu khắc

điêu khắc

So tranh điêu khắc is like the piece of art, the noun

and điêu khắc is like the art in general

điêu khắc

buổi triển lãm

buổi triển lãm means “exhibition”

and “to exhibit”, I mean a verb we use

triển lãm

so a lot of Vietnamese verbs

if you want to turn them from a verb to a noun

most of the time we will just add like one word before the verb

so that would be a noun

for example like

triển lãm is “exhibit” right

and buổi triển lãm is “exhibition”

phim

or we can use

thước phim

thước phim means like “film”

phim or thước phim

so this is also a borrowing word right?

thước phim

if you want to talk about “frames”

we use

khung

so like my “videos frame” we use

khung hình

bộ sưu tập

for “collection” or “gallery”

bộ sưu tập

but mostly we use “collection”

“Collection”- bộ sưu tập

thổi thủy tinh

thổi thủy tinh means “glass blowing”

and if you want to say like “glass blowing technique”

we use

kỹ thuật thổi thủy tinh

so kỹ thuật here is “a technique”

kỹ thuật thổi thủy tinh

“glass blowing technique”

sơn phủ

sơn phủ is like “the glaze”

like the top layer of something

a painting or even for

for cakes, baking cakes

sơn phủ

but for cakes we don't use sơn phủ

we use lớp phủ is like the cover layer

lớp phủ

so in art we use glaze as sơn phủ

bột màu

bột màu is like the powder

“the color powder”

or “gouache”

I don't know if I pronounced correctly

but “gouache”,“gouache”

I think so

also one more word

thiết kế đồ họa

you remember what thiết kế is

thiết kế is “design” right?

đồ họa, “graphic”

thiết kế đồ họa- “graphic design”
