Lesson conversation

Eric: Listen to the conversation with the English translation.
Tâm: Dear listeners of the "Youth" radio channel. Today, we’ll meet and talk with a very special person.
Tâm: That is the new champion of the competition "Road to Olympia Peak", Mr Tran Thanh Binh.
Tâm: Hello Thanh Binh, congratulations on your victory. How are you feeling now?
Bình: Thanks Miss Minh Tam and hello listeners of Youth radio channel. I'm still floating on air now.
Tâm: Do you still remember your most tense moment?
Bình: It was while waiting for the judges' assessment on my final answer. I was shivering then.
Tâm: So, what’s the secret that helped you overcome all the obstacles in the competition?
Bình: I think it’s a belief in myself and the willingness to take risks in decisive moments.
Tâm: What’s your next plan?
Bình: First of all, I’ll focus on the university exam. And in the future, I want to do in-depth research into physics.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hoang Anh: Eric, have you ever heard about Đường lên đỉnh Olympia or “Road to Olympia peak”?
Eric: I guess it's the biggest knowledge competition for high school students on television in Vietnam?
Hoang Anh: Right. This competition has been held every year since 1999. It’s the longest-running TV show on Vietnamese TV, and that includes sports, entertainment. and business news broadcasts.
Eric: What does the champion receive?
Hoang Anh: The champion of the year is awarded $35,000USD together with a 100% scholarship to study at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia. Most Olympia champions are now working and doing research overseas.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Eric: Let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Hoang Anh: nhân vật
Eric: which means “figure,” or “character (a special person)"
Hoang Anh: nhân vật is used to refer to a character in a movie, novel or other types of artwork. For example...nhân vật chính
Eric: “main character”
Hoang Anh: nhân vật phụ
Eric: “sub character”
Hoang Anh: nhân vật chính diện
Eric: “hero character”
Hoang Anh: You can also use nhân vật to talk about a well-known person who plays an important role in society. For example...nhân vật chính trị nổi bật
Eric: “prominent political character.” Can you give us an example using our keyword?
Hoang Anh: Sure. For example, you can say.. Đây là danh sách nhân vật lịch sử của Việt Nam.
Eric: ..which means “This is a list of Vietnamese historical figures.” Okay, what's the next word?
Hoang Anh: tân
Eric: which means “new”
Hoang Anh: tân is a Chinese origin word which means “new”. It’s used as an adjective and comes before a noun or noun phrase.
Eric: You can use this word before the noun indicating a person's title, mostly high-ranking people’s titles. For example...
Hoang Anh: tân quán quân
Eric: “new champion”
Hoang Anh: tân tổng thống
Eric: “new president”
Hoang Anh: tân hiệu trưởng
Eric: “new principal”
Hoang Anh: You can also add tân before the name of a Chinese movie or drama series to indicate the new version of that movie or drama series. For example…Tân Thủy Hử
Eric: which means “New version of the Chinese television series “All men are brothers”.
Hoang Anh: tân is a fairly old word, and is now used mostly in written documents or formal speeches. It’s rarely used in daily conversation.
Eric: Can you give us an example using this word?
Hoang Anh: For example, you can say.. Sau đây là bài phát biểu của vị tân hiệu trưởng của chúng ta.
Eric: .. which means “Here comes the speech of our new principal.” Okay, what's the next word?
Hoang Anh: mang tính quyết định
Eric: which means “decisive”.
Hoang Anh: mang tính is the short version of mang tính chất, which literally means “having the quality, feature”. quyết định means “decision”. So mang tính quyết định literally means “having the features of a decision” and it means “decisive”.
Eric: You can use this phrase to refer to a moment, choice, or action that is very important, which can decide the results of what comes next. Hoang Anh, can you give us an example using this word?
Hoang Anh: Sure. Đây là hành động mang tính quyết định cho tương lai của công ty.
Eric: .. which means “This is a decisive action for our company's future.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to clarify information in Vietnamese.
Hoang Anh: To do this, you can use the words đó là, which mean “that is,” or “it is”. It can be followed by a noun, noun phrase, verb, or verb phrase.
Eric: Hoang Anh, can you give us some examples?
Hoang Anh: For example…A says - Điều kiện để được tham gia nhóm này là gì? and B responds Đó là khả năng tiếng Anh tốt và đam mê du lịch.
Eric: This means “- What is the condition to join this group?” and “That is English proficiency and an interest in travelling” respectively.
Hoang Anh: Another example is… A says Bí quyết để có làn da đẹp là gì? and B responds Đó là ăn nhiều rau, hoa quả và uống nhiều nước.
Eric: Which mean “- What is the secret to beautiful skin?” - and “That is eating a lot of vegetables, fruits and drink a lot of water.” respectively.
Hoang Anh: Listeners, another very useful phrase is Đó là + khi or lúc + a clause.
Eric: Hoang Anh, let's break this phrase down.
Hoang Anh: Đó là means “That is,” or “It is” and khi or lúc means “when” . To recap here, we have...Đó là khi or lúc + a clause.
Eric: And what if the action or event happened in the past?
Hoang Anh: In this case đó là still stays the same without changing the form of là, which means “to be”. For example…A says- Trải nghiệm tuyệt vời nhất của bạn là gì? and B responds Đó là khi anh ấy cầu hôn tôi tại một bãi biển tuyệt đẹp.
Eric: These mean….“- What is your best experience?” and “-It is when he proposed to me at a very beautiful beach” respectively.
Hoang Anh: Or A says -Kỷ niệm đáng nhớ nhất thời sinh viên của anh là gì? and B responds - Đó là lúc tôi cùng bạn bè đi cắm trại trong rừng.
Eric: Meaning “- What is your most unforgettable memory during your student life?” and “That was when I went camping in the forest with my friends” respectively. Ok, our next grammar point is how to express an unchanged state of being.
Hoang Anh: To do this, use the phrase vẫn còn. Vẫn còn means “still”. This phrase is placed before a verb or an adjective to express the continuity of an action or state of feeling.
Eric: Can you give us some examples?
Hoang Anh: For example…Cô ấy vẫn còn đợi chồng về ăn tối.
Eric: “She is still waiting for her husband to come home for dinner.”
Hoang Anh: Bao năm không gặp mà anh ấy vẫn còn độc thân.
Eric: “ I haven’t seen him for many years but he is still single.” Listeners, please check the lesson notes for more examples and explanations.

Outro

Eric: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Hoang Anh: Tạm biệt.
