Body
Chigusa: Listeners, welcome back to the Inner Circle.
Peter: Last time, you learned how to set small, measurable, monthly goals
Chigusa: ...the kind of goals that you can easily reach...
Peter: ...so you can actually make progress and achieve your New Year’s resolution
Chigusa: Peter, what was your goal for the month?
Peter: My goal was 1 minute of Korean conversation.
Chigusa: So tell us, how did you do?
Peter: I hit it, Chigusa. 1 minute timed and tested with my Skype teacher.
Chigusa: Wow, that’s great. I see why you aim for small goals. 1 minute is not hard at all.
Peter: Exactly. Think about it. You introduce yourself, say where you’re from....
Chigusa: Yeah, that’s about 10 to 15 seconds.
Peter: You ask your partner where they’re from. That whole exchange can take another 20 to 30 seconds.
Chigusa: And before you know it, time’s up...
Peter: You’ve hit your goal. Learning a language is that easy... when you set small, measurable goals.
Chigusa: But I bet our listeners want to know, Peter. What was your process exactly?
Peter: Let’s get into this month's Inner Circle.
Chigusa: How to Use Anchor Points and Language Profiles to Turbocharge Your Learning
Peter: And let’s jump into the first part.
Chigusa: Part 1: The Power of Anchor Points for Long Term Success
Peter: Listeners, if you remember, last time we briefly covered anchor points.
Chigusa: Anchor points are points that keep you attached to the language and keep you motivated.
Peter: It could be language school, where you can’t back out.
Chigusa: You could be living or traveling to the country that speaks it...
Peter: ...so it’s something that keeps you motivated to learn the language.
Chigusa: You could invest in a program or a tutor and because you paid money...
Peter: ...your motivation is high. Plus, with a face-to-face tutor, they expect you there, so that adds more pressure.
Chigusa: Or, you could like TV shows, movies and music in the target language...
Peter: ...and because you’re immersed in these shows or music...
Chigusa: ...You naturally want to know what they’re saying.
Peter: An anchor point is something keeps you anchored to your learning. Listeners, you already have 1 big anchor point. You invested in the Premium or Premium PLUS program. This is 1 big anchor point to get you started.
Chigusa: But the more you have, the better off you are.
Peter: So, Chigusa, quick recap. Why do we add anchor points?
Chigusa: We add anchor points to improve our motivation and stick with the goal.
Peter: Exactly. The next thing to know is — not all of your points are equal.
Chigusa: Like, If you live in the country, that anchor point will be stronger..
Peter: ...than if you just like music in your target language.
Chigusa: Right, because if you live there, you need it to survive...
Peter: ...You need it for daily life. Your motivation is extra high. Music? Maybe, not so high.
Chigusa: As another example: If you’re a Premium member, that’s a strong anchor point...
Peter: But, if you’re a Premium PLUS member, it’s a bit stronger because you paid more and you have a teacher to talk to, so you have a personal relationship.
Chigusa: So you have a stronger desire to make it work. Plus there’s a teacher there waiting for you and expecting to hear from you...
Peter: And if you’re at a language school, you paid the most...
Chigusa: ..and your life and schedule are dictated by school and assignments...
Peter: That's very high on the list of strong anchor points.
Chigusa: So, Peter, now that we know all about anchor points...
Peter: ...you can start adding them to your routine to improve your motivation.
Chigusa: Is that what you did this past month?
Peter. Exactly. To reach my goal, I got a Korean skype teacher so I practice speaking.
Chigusa: And what’s your schedule like with her?
Peter: Every Monday night at 8PM. She’s expecting me on Mondays.
Chigusa: And you can’t back out of that.
Peter: I can’t. So, first anchor point is Premium PLUS. KoreanClass101.com. Second point, my skype teacher. Third anchor point, I’m traveling to Korea in July to see my Korean friends. And, Chigusa, they are expecting me to speak a bit.
Chigusa: So, those are 3 Korean anchor points.
Peter: Exactly. And my teacher gives me weekly assignments. So, even if I’m a little lax in reaching out to her, she always reaches out to me.
Chigusa: You have quite a bit. Now, what is your strongest anchor point?
Peter: Definitely travel. Because knowing the language can make all the difference.
Chigusa: Yea, you could have a terrible experience, or a very enjoyable one, if you know the basics.
Peter: In my experience, even attempting to speak a language, even if it's not very good, usually wins you the respect of some of the people that are native speakers. Plus, my Premium PLUS teacher and my skype teacher, you know, they expect language progress. So, these are some pretty strong points and I’ve weaved them into my weekly routine.
Chigusa: Alright, so you added anchor points, now let’s talk about the 1-minute goal...
Peter: Let’s jump into the second part.
Chigusa: Part 2: Why You Need a Language Learning Profile
Peter: Listeners, my goal was to speak 1 minute of conversation in Korean.
Chigusa: So, how did you reach it?
Peter: I used something called a language learning profile.
Chigusa: Hmm, that sounds new. What is that?
Peter: So, a language learning profile is your personal information. Your name. Age. Where you’re from. Your job. Your interests. Your family. Favorite food.
Chigusa: Okay.
Peter: And based on your personal information, you get must-know phrases so you can talk about yourself in that language.
Chigusa: So, if you write down that your name is Peter, you’re from New York, you live in Tokyo...
Peter: Your profile will give you phrases to say “My name is Peter I’m from New York I live in Tokyo and so on.
Chigusa: And what’s the goal here?
Peter: The goal is, you get relevant phrases needed to talk about yourself because, face it...
Chigusa: ..yeah, if we meet someone new, we introduce ourself, we talk about ourselves.
Peter: But the problem is, most people, when they start learning, they learn the basics first...
Chigusa: Ah, and they get around much later to actually talking about themselves.
Peter: Exactly. But, a language learning profile gives you lines you need to use right away.
Chigusa: Okay, i see now! So, if you have that...
Peter: ..then speaking 1 minute of conversation is easy. You introduce yourself, say where you’re from....
Chigusa: Yeah, that’s about 10 to 15 seconds.
Peter: You can ask your partner where they’re from. That can take another 20 to 30 seconds.
Chigusa: And before you know it, time’s up.
Peter: So, I practiced these lines with my Premium PLUS teacher.
Chigusa: She corrected you?
Peter: She did. And when it came time to sit down with my skype teacher, we turned on a timer and I used those lines.
Chigusa: Okay, now what can our listeners take away from this?
Peter: Let’s jump into the last part.
Chigusa: Part 3: What You Need to Do in Month 2.
Peter: Now that you’re in your 2nd month of learning language...
Chigusa: ...there are 2 things you need to do.
Peter: You need to set anchor points and create a language learning profile.
Chigusa: Let’s do anchor points first.
Peter: If you want to make sure you can stick with the language for the long term.
Chigusa: ...you need to set anchor points.
Peter: Anchor points are points that keep you attached, anchored to the language...
Chigusa: ...and keep you motivated.
Peter: Living in a country that speaks it. Travel plans. Enrolling in a school or a language learning program like InnovativeLanguage.com. Relatives that speak the language. Music or movies in the target language. Even food and restaurants from that country...
Chigusa: All of these are anchor points that you can use to improve your motivation...
Peter: ...and stick with the language in the long term.
Chigusa: And you already have one. Our learning program.
Peter: So, while you’re learning the language with our system...
Chigusa: It’s time to add some anchor points to keep you on track.
Peter: Here’s how.
Chigusa: Inside the Inner Circle PDF, you’ll find a cheat sheet with common anchor points.
Peter: Take a look. Pick a musician.
Chigusa: Or, pick a TV show in that target language.
Peter: Or, pick a restaurant to go to.
Chigusa: Give yourself that extra “thing to do,” that extra anchor point.
Peter: Then, make it part of your routine. Watch that TV series once a week.
Chigusa: Or, listen to that artist daily.
Peter: Yes, you’re not directly learning the language with these specific points but...
Chigusa: ...you’re surrounding yourself with the language
Peter: And as a result, you’re more attached to the language.
Chigusa: ...and your motivation will grow.
Peter: That’s why people that travel to Japan or who are interested in anime tend to do maybe better with Japanese than those who don’t have those type of attachments.
Chigusa: And why Korean learners that like KPOP or Korean culture in general, tend to learn faster.
Peter: Download the PDF and fill in specifics for these anchor points. By building these anchor points up, you will further your connection with the language and increase your chances of progressing faster. Next, you’ll want to create a language learning profile.
Chigusa: A language learning profile is your personal information. Your name. Age. Where you’re from. Your job. Your interests. Your family. Favorite food.
Peter: Fill out your information, and based on it...
Chigusa: ...You get the phrases and vocab you need to talk about yourself, where you’re from, your age, your interests...
Peter: ...so you can start speaking right away.
Chigusa: So, inside this Inner Circle PDF, we’ve included a downloadable form.
Peter: Download it, print it out and write your details in.
Chigusa: Now, to get the phrases that you’ll need to talk about yourself...
Peter: ...there are 2 things you can do.
Chigusa: First, if you’re a Premium PLUS member, send it to your teacher...
Peter: ...and they’ll provide you with the must-know phrase and lines you need.
Chigusa: And second, if you’re a Premium member... email us.
Peter: Email us at inner dot circle at innovativelanguage dot com
Chigusa: And we’ll take care of it for you.
Peter: So, download and fill out your language learning profile and send it in.
Chigusa: And you’ll get the the lines you need to talk about yourself, your hobbies, where you’re from...
Peter: More than enough to have a 1 minute conversation in your target language.
Chigusa: And that was your goal for this last month, which you hit!
Peter: All thanks to the language learning profile.
Chigusa: Alright Peter, let’s talk about your next small, measurable, monthly goal.
Peter. Okay, for next month, let’s aim for 3 minutes of Korean conversation.
Chigusa: Great! Deadline?
Peter: March 31st.
Chigusa: Sounds good. And listeners, let us know what your small, measurable monthly goal is.
Peter: Email us at inner dot circle at innovative language dot com.
Chigusa: And stay tuned for the next Inner Circle.
