Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Vietnam series at VietnamesePod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Vietnamese holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 4 - National Day in Vietnam.
Vietnam’s National Day or Ngày Quốc Khánh falls on September 2nd. This is a very important day for the country, as it marks historical events and the birth of a nation.
In this lesson, we will learn about the National Day in Vietnam.

September 2nd is also the date that a person who played an important role in Vietnam's history passed away. Do you know who this is?

On September 2nd, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh, or Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh, read the Vietnamese Declaration of Independence, or bản tuyên ngôn độc lập, in a meeting held at Ba Dinh square in Hanoi. In the declaration, Ho Chi Minh declared the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam to the people of Vietnam and to the world.
The National Day celebrations are usually held in a formal manner in Vietnam Embassies in many countries around the world. Diplomatic officials of the local countries are also invited to attend the celebration to forge closer ties. On this day, the government of Vietnam also receives many greetings from the authorities of other countries.
This is an official public holiday, so workers, office employees, pupils, and students are given the day off. To celebrate the occasion, many swimming, sailing, and boat racing festivals are held across the country, attracting numerous participants.
To celebrate National Day, families, stores, and shopping centers everywhere display Vietnam's national flag, with its red background and yellow star. The Vietnamese national flag is called quốc kỳ.
