Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Vietnam series at VietnamesePod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Vietnamese holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 10 - Vietnam Teacher's Day.
Vietnam Teacher's Day, or ngày Nhà giáo Việt Nam in Vietnamese, is a festival to honor those who work in the field of education. This day is an opportunity for many generations of students to express their gratitude to their teachers, in Vietnamese called giáo viên in general or nhà giáo in a respectful way. In this lesson, we will introduce you to the widely held notion in Vietnam of "Being deferential to your teacher and having respect for morals" and some of the activities held during this holiday.

Vietnam Teacher's Day is celebrated on November 20 every year for students, or học trò, to remember the teachers who have taught them. It’s a day to praise Vietnam’s spirit of "Being deferential to your teacher and having respect for morals", by showing respect, in Vietnamese called sự kính trọng, and gratitude, or lòng biết ơn. Students often buy flowers to give to their teachers, so many flower vendors will set up in front of school gates on this occasion.
On this day, students visit, give flowers to, and send greetings to their current, or former teachers. Many people who have already graduated still come to visit their old schools and teachers, so this day usually becomes an opportunity for class reunions, or họp lớp, in which graduates reunite and relive old memories and talk about their current lives. This is also the day that the State ministries assess and reward teachers who've performed well during the year.
Some parents also make use of this chance to meet with and express their gratitude to their children's teachers. However, recently, some parents give expensive gifts or money to teachers. This phenomenon has been limited and discouraged by the Ministry of Education and Training to avoid problems concerning impartiality among teachers.
