Hello everyone! I'm Linh.
It's a pleasure to meet you again today.
Welcome to VietnamesePod101.com.
Hi guys, it's Linh again. Welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com.
And I'm happy to see you guys again.
So this video is for you in case you want to ask another person to repeat what they said in Vietnamese.
And you want to show whether you're eager to learn Vietnamese.
And probably you want to try to communicate with a Vietnamese.
So today I'm going to share with you some survival phrases so that you can use in this kind of situations.
Let's get started.
If you want to say, how do you say this in Vietnamese, we say...
That means how do you say this in Vietnamese.
So let's make it more specific, okay? I'm not going to confuse you anymore.
If you want to say excuse me, can you say that one more time, please? We say...
That means can you repeat that, please? Or can you say it one more time?
Another way to ask the other person to repeat that, but in a slow way.
So you can say...
That means can you say it slowly, please?
Please remember that the tones are very important in Vietnamese.
So in order to let the other person understand what you said, it's very very important to distinguish and to make the tones clearly, okay?
So if you want to ask a single word in English or if that person knows English and maybe they can explain it to you in English, you can say...
That means what is this in English?
So one thing to remember the tones is to point out where there is a downtone or up tone.
For example, it would have a word, but in different tones, it would mean differently.
For example, down tone means from, however, means for, number four in the traditional language.
Or means to die or like death.
And... means like a word in traditional language, okay?
So you can see that, yeah, I know Vietnamese is difficult, but it's fun.
For example, if you want to ask someone how you write that in English, sorry, in Vietnamese, we say...
That means how do you write this, how do you write this in Vietnamese?
However, if you want to say how do we spell it in Vietnamese, we say...
And...
If you want to be more specific and you want to really ask the other person to write it down,
to write the words down or to write the sentence down, we say...
Means can you write it down, please?
Is like please, can you write it down, please?
Or...
Means can you repeat that, please?
Right, so after those questions or sentences and you still haven't understood what the other person said,
then you can say, sorry, I don't know, right?
And in Vietnamese, we can say...
So nowadays, I've seen a lot of foreigners when they came to Vietnam
and they tried to communicate with Vietnamese people,
they use Google Translate or they use like dictionary
so that every time they ask something,
they write the sentence in Google Translate and show it to Vietnamese people.
And it's a very convenient and easy way to communicate with local people.
However, I encourage you, I suggest you and highly recommend you to use these sentences
so that you can really try and catch up with the tones in Vietnamese.
Right, so that's pretty much everything for today
and those are some very basic sentences.
One thing I'd like to notice is please remember to practice the tones
because it's the most important thing when learning Vietnamese.
It's even more important than Vietnamese grammar
because Vietnamese grammar is like another story.
So, okay, so please practice the tones.
That is the number one thing you should learn when learning Vietnamese.
And yeah, that's it for today.
Thank you very much for watching, guys.
