Hi guys, it's Linh again.
Welcome back to VietnamesePod101.com,
the fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Vietnamese.
Trust me, this video today is super easy because you only need to remember one word when it comes to possessive pronouns. Let me see how I can explain it, but it's so so easy you can immediately use it after this video.
And let's get started
The word that I mentioned before is
của
của
của
dấu hỏi
Okay, so you have to bend the sound a little bit
của
It's like của
But when you come faster it's gonna be
của
của
của
For all kinds of possessive, we have my, your, her, his or mine, yours, his or hers
But in this situation in Vietnamese we only use this word của for everything
Now I'm gonna give you some examples so you can understand clearly.
First let's talk about “my” in Vietnamese
That means
của tôi
của tôi
của tôi
For example, “my car”
chiếc ô tô của tôi
chiếc ô tô của tôi
chiếc ô tô của tôi
“My house”
nhà của tôi
nhà của tôi
nhà của tôi
“My motorbike”
xe máy của tôi
xe máy của tôi
xe máy của tôi
Alright?
“My company”
công ty (của) tôi
công ty (của) tôi
This is a new thing, okay?
So you will notice that in some cases I only use tôi instead of của tôi
Because it's shorter and it's more natural
So instead of saying
công ty của tôi
We can actually use
công ty tôi
It's the same with like “my family”
We can use
gia đình tôi
gia đình tôi
gia đình tôi
Instead of using
gia đình của tôi
gia đình của tôi
Alright?
Now let's talk about “your”
For example
công việc của bạn
công việc của bạn
công việc của bạn
means “your job”
đồng nghiệp của bạn
đồng nghiệp của bạn
đồng nghiệp của bạn
Means “your colleagues” or “your co-workers”
In sentence we can say
Bạn có hay ra ngoài với đồng nghiệp của bạn không?
Bạn có hay ra ngoài với đồng nghiệp của bạn không?
Bạn có hay ra ngoài với đồng nghiệp của bạn không?
That means “Do you usually hang out with your colleagues?”
Bạn có hay ra ngoài với đồng nghiệp của bạn không?
Or in questions if you want to ask “Is it your car?”
You can say
Đây có phải ô tô của bạn không?
Đây có phải ô tô của bạn không?
Đây có phải ô tô của bạn không?
Next one if you want to say “her”
We say
của cô ấy
của cô ấy
của cô ấy
Cô ấy means “she” and
Của cô ấy means “her”
So in sentence
Nhà của cô ấy rất to.
Nhà của cô ấy rất to.
Nhà của cô ấy rất to.
Means “Her house is very big.”
Or
Mẹ cô ấy đã nghỉ hưu.
Mẹ cô ấy đã nghỉ hưu.
Mẹ cô ấy đã nghỉ hưu.
Means “Her mother is retired.”
So here I used Mẹ cô ấy or Mẹ của cô ấy
They are both okay, okay?
Mẹ cô ấy đã nghỉ hưu.
Công việc của cô ấy rất tốt.
Công việc của cô ấy rất tốt.
Công việc của cô ấy rất tốt.
Means “Her job is very good.”
Or “She has a really good job.”
Now let's talk about “his”
In Vietnamese we say
của anh ấy
của anh ấy
của anh ấy
của anh ấy means “his”
And for example
Vợ của anh ấy means “his wife”
Vợ của anh ấy
Vợ của anh ấy
In full sentence:
Vợ của anh ấy rất đẹp.
Vợ của anh ấy rất đẹp.
Vợ của anh ấy rất đẹp.
Means “His wife is very beautiful.”
Or if you want to say “His kids are so intelligent.”
We can say:
Các con của anh ấy rất thông minh.
Các con của anh ấy rất thông minh.
Các con của anh ấy rất thông minh.
Now next one if you want to say “its”
In Vietnamese we say
của nó
của nó
của nó
Means “its”
And the word nó in Vietnamese
We can use for both people and things
For example
Let's talk about people first
Usually in Vietnamese we use nó
For people who are younger than you
Or who are very very small
For example
Đồ chơi của nó
Means “his toys” or “her toys”
Đồ chơi của nó
So nó here means “a little boy” or “a little girl”
In sentence if you want to say “Don’t use her toys please!”
You can say
Đừng nghịch đồ chơi của nó.
Đừng nghịch đồ chơi của nó.
Đừng nghịch đồ chơi của nó.
That means like “Please don't use her toys!”
For example if you want to say
“Its color is very nice.”
Or “Its paint color is very nice.”
We can say
Mầu sơn của nó rất đẹp.
Mầu sơn của nó rất đẹp.
Mầu sơn của nó rất đẹp.
Now let's talk about “our”
In Vietnamese we say
của chúng tôi
của chúng tôi
của chúng tôi
Or
của chúng ta
của chúng ta
của chúng ta
Okay so if you're talking about yourself to another person
We say
của chúng tôi
But if you're talking about like ourselves with each other or among yourself
We say
của chúng ta
Ok?
của chúng tôi- của chúng ta
In sentence
Tôi rất yêu khu vườn của chúng tôi.
Tôi rất yêu khu vườn của chúng tôi.
Tôi rất yêu khu vườn của chúng tôi.
That means “I really love our garden.”
But if you're a wife and you're talking to your husband
And you want to say that “I really love our garden.”
We can say
Em rất yêu khu vườn của chúng ta.
Em rất yêu khu vườn của chúng ta.
Em rất yêu khu vườn của chúng ta.
So in this case you're talking to your husband
Okay so that's the difference between chúng tôi and chúng ta.
Last one if you want to say “their”
In Vietnamese we say
của họ
của họ
của họ
Okay and sometimes we can use của
But sometimes we don't have to
In sentence we can say
Nhà họ ở rất xa.
Nhà họ ở rất xa.
That means “Their house is very far.”
Nhà họ ở rất xa.
Another sentence would be
Tôi liên lạc được với nhân viên của họ.
Tôi liên lạc được với nhân viên của họ.
Tôi liên lạc được với nhân viên của họ.
means “I couldn't contact their employees.”
Tôi liên lạc được với nhân viên của họ.
So you might wonder what to use or how to use when it comes to “mine”,”yours, “his” or “hers” etc
I have to say that in this situation
Is not very common in Vietnam
In Vietnamese
For example if you want to just simply say
“My house is small but yours is big.”
In Vietnamese we still use like this
Nhà tôi thì nhỏ nhưng nhà anh thì to.
Nhà tôi thì nhỏ nhưng nhà anh thì to.
Nhà tôi thì nhỏ nhưng nhà anh thì to.
That means like “My house is small but your house is big.’
So we don't actually use “yours is big”
But we use “your house is big”
But if you still want to know like what does “yours” mean
In Vietnamese we have a word like that
That means
cái của + someone
That means things belong to someone
So for example cái của tôi means “mine”
And cái của bạn means “yours”
Okay?
We don't really use that in sentence
Because it's not very natural
So it's better just to use
của tôi
của bạn
của cô ấy
của anh ấy etc
All right the last situation that I want to mention
Is when you use possessive with names
So in these situations we only use the word
của before the names and that's completely perfect
For example
Video của Linh rất dài.
Video của Linh rất dài.
That means “Linh's videos are very long.”
Video của Linh - easy right?
So just của before the name and that's fine.
Another example would be
Các bài học của Vietnamese 101 rất thú vị.
Các bài học của Vietnamese 101 rất thú vị.
Các bài học của Vietnamese 101 rất thú vị.
Means “Vietnamese 101's lessons are very interesting.”
Các bài học của Vietnamese 101 rất thú vị.
