Words and Phrases for Using Your Smartphone in Vietnamese

In this video today, we're going to talk about some vocabulary

or some language that you can use to talk about smartphones.

The reason why we're having this video

because everybody has a smartphone and we use it a lot

and if you come to Vietnam, maybe you will need some basic words

or some basic phrases that you can use to find a smartphone

or what if something's wrong with your smartphone and you need some help

so probably this video will help you

and let's get started

No.1, điện thoại

điện thoại

điện thoại - dấu nặng, ok?

Điện thoại means you can use for cell phones, smartphones, desk phones as well

because nowadays everybody has a smartphone

and when you say điện thoại, that mostly means “cell phones”

If you want to say “desk phone”, it means điện thoại để bàn

điện thoại để bàn

điện thoại cố định

Ok?

So if you want to ask like “Is that a new phone?” or “Is that a new smartphone?”

You can say

Điện thoại mới à?

Specifically if you want to say “smartphone” or “cell phone”

we can say

điện thoại di động

Ok?

điện thoại để bàn and điện thoại di động

When you buy a new smartphone, usually we will have like a charger, earphones or other stuff like that, right?

In Vietnamese, we say sạc

sạc

sạc is for “charger” and tai nghe

tai nghe

tai nghe for “earphones”

sạc and tai nghe

For “SIM card”, we can say sim

sim

sim, the same, right?

And for “telephone numbe”r, we have số điện thoại

số điện thoại

In Vietnamese, people really really like to have like nice telephone number

Sometimes they have telephone number with their birthdays or maybe their birth year as well

Like my telephone number, I also have my birthday on it

So it's very nice and it's very easy to remember as well

And people believe that it's gonna be like a sign of luck.

Next one, of course we have a number

We need to have internet

Everybody needs it, right?

We also use data for data

But we say in a Vietnamese way

Đa ta

Ok, we can use either đa ta or 3G

3 means “three" and G means G

So, đa ta hoặc 3G

In sentence, we can say

Máy chị có 3G không?

Máy chị có 3G không? means “Does your phone have data?”

Something like that and

máy means “phone"

chị means “you" or “your" or “yours"

máy chị means “your phone"

In this situation, I'm talking to a woman who is older than me

So I address her chị- máy chị

có means “have” or “has”

We don't conjugate the verb in Vietnamese

có 3G không

So this is a yes/no question

And we have không at the end of the sentence

Máy chị có 3G không?

Máy ảnh

We also use “camera” but in a Vietnamese accent

So we say camêra

camêra

ok?

camêra

The next one, the thing that I also care about is the battery

Whether it's strong or not

Or it can last for a long time or not

And in Vietnamese, this is pin

Ok?

The P sound in Vietnamese is stronger than the “P” sound in English

And we don't say P-P but we say Pờ, pờ.

Pin means “battery”

One more thing is the brand is also very important

Because for me, I personally enjoy using Samsung products

So for Vietnamese, we can say Hãng

Hãng

Hãng means the brand

Hãng điện thoại means “phone brand”

Hãng điện thoại

So if you want to ask what kind of phone brand are you using

You can say

Chị đang dùng điện thoại hãng nào?

So after buying a new smartphone

Of course we have to start installing a lot of applications

In Vietnamese, we say ứng dụng

ứng dụng

ứng dụng means “application”

But if you want to say “software”

It means phần mềm

phần mềm

Ok?

ứng dụng and phần mềm

But also we have “hardware”

In Vietnamese, it's phần cứng

phần cứng

So mềm is “soft” and cứng is “hard”

Let's say you're traveling abroad

Or you have a business trip

That you have to travel

And you need roaming

So in Vietnamese, we say

chuyển vùng

chuyển- dấu hỏi,ok? vùng- dấu huyền

chuyển vùng

chuyển vùng means “roaming”

So if you want to say your phone is out of network coverage

In Vietnamese, we say

Điện thoại của tôi ngoài vùng phủ sóng.

Điện thoại của tôi means “my cellphone” or “my phone”

ngoài vùng phủ sóng means “out of network coverage”

Ok?

Điện thoại của tôi ngoài vùng phủ sóng.

If you want to say lock and unlock your phone

In Vietnamese, we say

khóa

khóa- dấu sắc for “lock" and

mở khóa

mở khóa means “unlock”

If you want to say using fingerprints to unlock your phone

We say

mở khóa vân tay

Ok?

Alright so khóa, mở khóa, mở khóa vân tay

Also we have nhận diện khuôn mặt

nhận diện khuôn mặt

So we have mở khóa- nhận diện khuôn mặt

mở khóa- nhận diện khuôn mặt

And the last one I want to talk about

For example, if you want to say “silent mode” we say

Chế độ im lặng

or “vibrate mode” we say

Chế độ rung

And “sound mode” we say

Chế độ chuông
