How to Ask for Directions in Vietnamese

The fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Vietnamese.

Today we're going to talk about positions and directions.

Let's get started!

4 directions

4 directions, in Vietnamese the word is hướng,hướng, hướng

One more time, hướng

That means “directions”.

And as we know we have 4 directions, right?

The south, the north, the east and the west.

Now let's practice slowly in Vietnamese.

For the north, hướng bắc

hướng bắc

Both have dấu sắc but the tones are a little bit different.

hướng bắc

For the north, how about the south?

hướng nam

And the east?

hướng đông

The last one, the west?

hướng tây

Ok, so we have bắc, nam, đông, tây

hướng bắc, hướng nam, hướng đông, hướng tây

Now let's talk about the positions.

There are plenty of words for sure but I will link them together and we'll talk about opposite words so you guys can easily remember.

In English when we talk about a specific place you will use the preposition “at”, right?

And sometimes you have to use “in”, sometimes you have to use “on” for different positions but for Vietnamese we only use one word.

Now let's talk about the positions.

Ở trên

Ở dưới

Ở trên

Ở dưới

Ở trên- Ở dưới

This is my mouse, ok? Captain America.

Alright, so my mouse is on my hand.

Then you can say

Con chuột ở trên tay tôi.

Con chuột is “the mouse”. Ở trên is “on top”.

And tay tôi is “my hand”.

Con chuột ở trên tay tôi.

Ở bên trái

On the left

Ở bên phải

So, Ở bên trái- Ở bên phải

You will see in English we will say “on the left” and “on the right” but for all the prepositions we only use one word Ở for everything, ok?

So Ở bên trái and Ở bên phải.

Alright, so now where is the mouse? Where is my mouse?

Con chuột ở bên phải của tôi.

And what is that? Leave a comment below.

Con chuột ở bên trái của tôi.

Now, next one:

Ở đằng trước

And

Ở đằng sau

Ở đằng trước- Ở đằng sau

Next one is “near” and “far” so in this situation we can say

Ở gần

And

Ở xa

For example:

Nhà tôi ở gần công ty tôi.

Means “My place is near my company.”

Similarly we also have “here” and “there”, “over here” and “over there”.

In Vietnamese we will say

Ở đây

And

Ở kia

That means “here” and “there”.

For example

Ở đây là ở đâu? “Where is this?” or “Where is here?”

Ở đây là ở đâu?

And then you will see that in Vietnamese usually the question word here is “where”.

We will not put at the beginning of the sentence but instead we put at the end of the sentence.

Ở trong

Ở trong và Ở trong

That means “inside” and “outside”.

Ở trong, ở ngoài

For example, “I'm inside my room”. In Vietnamese you can say

Tôi đang ở trong phòng.

“I'm not outside”. Then you can just say

Tôi không ở ngoài.

Ở trong, ở ngoài

Alright, good job. We also have some other words that I'd like to introduce to you guys.

For example,

Bên cạnh

Bên cạnh means next to or it also means “beside”.

So “My laptop is next to me.”

That means

Máy tính của tôi đang ở bên cạnh.

Ở giữa

Ở giữa means “in the middle”.

So for example

Đèn vàng ở giữa đèn xanh và đèn đỏ.

That means “The yellow light is in the middle” or “t's between the green light and the red light”.

Đối diện

Đối diện means “facing” or the “opposite side, “in the opposite”

Đối diện

TV ở đối diện tôi.

Okay, last one I want to share is “at the corner”.

In Vietnamese you can say

ở trong góc

Trong means “in”. So you can say ở trong góc or ở góc: “at the corner of something”.

For example, “The fan is at the corner of the room.”

You can say

Cái quạt ở trong góc của căn phòng.

That's pretty much for today. A lot of vocabulary, right?

But it's very helpful if you can take notes in the notebook to review and practice sometimes.
