Vietnamese Phrases You Need to Make a Phone Call

As you see that I just had a phone call with my sister and

it's very helpful if you also know some useful phrases for a phone call, right?

So now let's impress Vietnamese people.

The fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Vietnamese.

Maybe you all know that usually we start a phone call by saying A lô, A lô, right?

That means ‘hello”.

I think this one is a loan word that we borrow from French.

I think in French they also say A lô, right?

But first, before we jump into these useful phrases,

I'd like to introduce some ways that you can ask for a telephone number.

And you can say

Số điện thoại của bạn là gì?

Số điện thoại here means “telephone number.”

của bạn is the possessive adjective which is “your” or “yours”.

là gì means “is what”.

So we can understand “What is your telephone number?”

One more time.:

Số điện thoại của bạn là gì?

Another way to ask for telephone number.

If you are a man and you want to ask for a girl's telephone number,

then you can nicely say

Cho anh xin số điện thoại của em được không?

That means “Can I have your telephone number?” or “Can you give me your telephone number please?”

Something like that.

But here because you are a man and you are older so you can use anh for yourself

and use em to address the person.

Cho anh xin số điện thoại của em được không?

Alright, if you want to give the person your telephone number then you can say

Số điện thoại của tôi là…

Số điện thoại is “telephone number.”

của tôi is “mine” and là is “to be” verb.

Số điện thoại của tôi là…

And then you can quickly say your number.

So since we are talking about the telephone numbers, let's review a little bit how to count numbers from 0 to 10.

On the other hand, if you don't want to give the person your telephone number

but you still want to keep in touch with them

then you can use your email instead.

So in this situation you can say

Bạn có thể liên lạc với tôi qua email.

Since you already have the telephone numbers

There will be two situations where you want to take the phone call and you don't want to take the phone call.

So let's practice.

For the first situation if you want to take the phone call

then you can say

So you can say

A lô, a lô. Ai đấy ạ? A lô?

So you can say A lô, and Ai đấy ạ?

Ai đấy ạ?

Ai đấy ạ? means “who's that?”

and ạ here is the word that you use at the end of the sentence to ask

when you talk to a person who is older than you to show respect.

Ai đấy ạ?

A lô. Ai đấy ạ?

Chào Linh. Anh là Lâm.

Chào anh Lâm.

Em khoẻ không?

Em khoẻ. Cảm ơn anh!

Em có rảnh không, mình nói chuyện một lúc?

Em rảnh ạ.

Mình nói tiếng Anh nhé?

Can you guess what I just said?

In this situation, the first sentence I say:

A lô. Ai đấy ạ?

That means “Hello. Who's that?”

A lô. Ai đấy ạ?

And then the other person said

Chào Linh. Anh là Lâm.

That means “Hello, it’s Lam” or”Hello, my name is Lam”.

Chào Linh. Anh là Lâm.

Chào anh Lâm.

Chào anh

Chào chị

and then you put their names after that

Em khỏe không?

Em khỏe không? means “How are you?”

So in this situation I am em and the other person is anh

Em khỏe không?

Next one I said

Em khỏe, cảm ơn anh

So I say Em khỏe, cảm ơn anh

to respond to the sentence that he asked “How are you?”

Em khỏe, cảm ơn anh

Em có rảnh không, mình nói chuyện một lúc?

means “Are you free?Can we talk for a few minutes?”, or “Can we talk for a moment?”

Em rảnh không, mình nói chuyện một lúc?

And then I said

Em rảnh ạ.

That means “I'm free now" or “I'm available now".

The last sentence is

Mình nói tiếng Anh nhé?

That means “Can we speak English?”

Mình nói tiếng Anh nhé?

These are just some small examples

of how to start a conversation and I hope that you can use them quickly.

Situation number two: when you don’t really want to take a phone call,

or you are just simply busy and you can’t talk right now

so there are some ways that you can respond to these phone calls.

For example

Tôi đang bận, tôi gọi lại cho bạn sau nhé?

That means “I'm busy now, can I call you later?”

Tôi đang bận, tôi gọi lại cho bạn sau nhé?

Or you can ask if the person can call you back later

and in this situation you can say

Bạn có thể gọi lại cho tôi sau được không?

Means “Can you call me back later?”

There will be some cases

that you don't really want to answer

the phone call or you don't really

want the person to call you back again

I hope that it will not happen to you

but just in case if you really need it

then you can say to the person

Làm ơn đừng gọi cho tôi nữa.

means “Please don't call me again.”

There will be another case when

the person calls the wrong number

so in this situation you can say

Xin lỗi, bạn nhầm số rồi

Or for me sometimes I just

quickly say

Nhầm số rồi ạ.

Xin lỗi, bạn nhầm số rồi.

Nhầm số rồi ạ.
