Useful Phrases for Talking to Your Doctor in Vietnamese

I'm so tired. I'm very sleepy. I feel hurt everywhere. I don't want to work.

I just want to stay home and rest. So how do you tell all of them to a doctor in Vietnam?

So that's why this video is for you today because I'm going to share you some ways to talk to the doctor when you have to go to the hospital.

Hi everyone it's Linh and welcome back to another video and now let's get started.

As soon as you see the doctor you should say hello doctor right

and in Vietnamese you can say

Chào bác sĩ!

Chào bác sĩ! means “Hello doctor!” very easy right but if you see a

nurse then you can say

Chào anh or Chào chị that's fine okay?

One more time:

Chào bác sĩ

Chào anh!

Chào chị!

A very easy way to say that i feel something or i have some symptoms or something then you can say

Tôi thấy…

Tôi thấy… that means “I see…” or “I feel…”

In sentence you can say

Tôi thấy mệt

that means “I feel tired”

Tôi thấy đau

that means “I feel hurt”

Now let's learn some vocabulary about symptoms. It'll be some adjectives okay?

First one is

Mệt

Mệt means tired

or you can say

Mỏi

Mỏi means sore

Ah, ah. That is đau, which means “hurt” or “painful”

Also you can say that you feel sleepy right

and in Vietnamese you can say

Buồn ngủ

Buồn ngủ means “sleepy” or you want to sleep you you feel like sleeping

but buồn here means sad so don't think that i'm sad because i cannot sleep okay?

And also if your body feels

hot or cold then you can say

Nóng

Nóng for “hot”

And

Lạnh

Lạnh for cold

Nóng

Lạnh

Okay so we have symptoms we have: mệt, mỏi, đau, nóng, lạnh, buồn ngủ

etc right and now let's talk about where you feel hurt okay?

For example if you want to say that “I feel hurt somewhere” then you can say

Tôi bị đau

means “I feel hurt” or “It's painful” or “It hurts”

Tôi bị đau

but if you want to say that “I feel hurt on my head” or “I have a headache” and you can say

Tôi bị đau đầu.

so đau đầu here means “headache"

Tôi bị đau đầu that means “I have a headache” or you can say

Tôi bị đau bụng.

Tôi bị đau bụng means “I have a stomachache”. Đau bụng here means “hurt in your stomach” or “a stomachache”

so Tôi bị đau bụng means “I have a stomachache”.

Tôi bị đau lưng.

uh similarly it means “I have a backache”, lưng here means “back” so

Tôi bị đau lưng.

All right, easy?

So it's the same with every way in your body we don't have specific words for each

sickness of like in english for example headache stomachache or earache but the other things are

different so in Vietnamese you can just put

Tôi bị đau with the position and that will be “You feel hurt at + there.”

Now after the doctor explaining everything then you can ask uh if you need to abstain from anything

right in vietnamese you can say

Tôi có cần phải kiêng gì không?

that means “Do i need to abstain for anything?” all right?

The next one if you are not sure whether

you should take a day off or you should rest properly then you can ask

Tôi có cần phải nghỉ làm không?

means “Do i need to take an off day?” or “Do i need to rest at home?”, something like that

So Tôi có cần phải nghỉ làm không?

And the last one if you want to ask if you need to get any tests done then you can say

Tôi có cần phải làm xét nghiệm gì không?

Okay?

And then of course before you leave you should say uh “Thank you doctor!” right?

And in vietnamese that is

Cảm ơn bác sĩ!

okay so here you will also see that um “Do i need to…?” or “Do i have to…?” in Vietnamese you can say

Tôi có cần…?

Tôi có cần phải…?

Okay?

And also of course if you want to say uh “You have to do something” and in Vietnamese we say

Bạn cần phải…

Okay? I think that one is very uh common in english when we say “I have to do something” or “you have to do something” and then today we learned a new grammar point which is Bạn cần phải… and then you put the verb after that.

For example

Bạn cần phải đi làm đúng giờ.

that means “You need to go to work on time”
