If you know how to count numbers in Vietnamese already,

then today is gonna be a very easy topic for you because we talk about the ordinal numbers.

Why? Because you only need to remember one word.

That's it.

And I'll show you what it is.

The magic word, the key word, the only word that you need to remember

when we learn this topic today is

Thứ

dấu sắc

okay?

Thứ

So interestingly, this word you also can use to tell dates in Vietnamese.

I'm sorry, to tell the days in Vietnamese.

For example, Monday, it'll be thứ hai

okay

Now, let's take a look at the examples

thứ nhất

thứ nhất means “first”

but also we have another word for first

we can use đầu tiên

đầu tiên means “the first one”

so you can either use thứ nhất or đầu tiên

How to use it in a sentence?

Tháng này tôi đứng thứ nhất trong công ty.

means “This month I'm the first one in my company.”

But for đầu tiên, how can we use it in a sentence?

You can say

Neil Amstrong là người đầu tiên bay lên mặt trăng.

So you will hear là

here is the “to be” verb

là người đầu tiên

người đầu tiên is “the first person”

bay lên mặt trăng means “to fly to the moon”

Neil Amstrong là người đầu tiên bay lên mặt trăng.

And also when you have a presentation that you want to say

the first thing that I'd like to share

so you can say

Điều đầu tiên mà tôi muốn nói là…

that means “The first thing that I'd like to say…or I'd like to share…”

so in this situation you can use both

for informal and formal situations.

So that is for number one

that is for the first

and how about the second

In this situation you only need to use

thứ and number two which is hai

so that is thứ hai

Thứ hai means “secondly” or “second”

or you also can use for Monday

Thứ hai

in sentence:

Thứ ba là ngày thứ hai trong tuần.

so that means “Tuesday is the second day of the week.”

so you will see that thứ ba and thứ hai

they sound very similar right

but thứ ba is for “Tuesday”

and thứ hai is for the second.

Thứ ba là ngày thứ hai trong tuần.

How about the third?

so in this situation the third is

Thứ ba

but it also means “Tuesday”

that is so confusing

so again

Thứ ba

Ngày Chủ nhật thứ ba của tháng sáu là ngày của cha.

means “The third Sunday of June is Father's Day.”

okay so next one is number four

then you can say for fourth

you can say

thứ tư

interestingly number four in Vietnamese is bốn

but for ordinal number we use tư instead

tư

thứ tư

okay we also have a similar word

which is thứ tự

so you will see that here we have a dot

which is the dấu nặng

so when you put the dot there it will be “the order”

it means “order”

the order

but fourth is thứ tư

so similarly you can use from number five to the next ones

you can just put thứ and the numbers

thứ năm

and then

thứ sáu

thứ bảy
