Huyen: Xin Chào. I'm Huyen.
Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the verb...
Huyen: áp dụng
Becky: which means “to apply.” The conversation takes place at an electronics store.
Huyen: It's between Bình and Lâm.
Becky: The speakers are strangers, so they’ll be using formal Vietnamese. Okay, let's listen to the conversation.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Becky: Huyen, do Vietnamese people like shopping?
Huyen: Yes. Very much. Even while travelling to other countries, Vietnamese tourists love going to shopping centers, malls, or anywhere that sells things.
Becky: That’s true. I heard that for many Vietnamese, it’s okay not to visit all the famous tourist spots, but they can’t skip a shopping mall.
Huyen: (laughs) That sounds about right. If they can’t buy something to bring home, they will feel bad about their trip.
Becky: By the way, what products do Vietnamese people usually buy during a trip?
Huyen: Well, electronic goods and household appliances are popular, especially those imported from foreign countries such as America, Japan, Korea and Australia.
Becky: I see. Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Becky: Let's have a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Huyen: tặng
Becky: which means “to present.” You can use this verb with your friends, or someone younger than you.
Huyen: Right. When we give a gift to an older person or a distinguished person, we use the verb biếu instead of tặng. Biếu is more polite.
Becky: Huyen, how can we say “to present someone something” in Vietnamese? Is the order the same as in English?
Huyen: Yes, it is. First say tặng, the verb meaning “to present.” Then add the person’s name and the object.
Becky: Can you give us an example using the pattern?
Huyen: Sure. If An presents me with a bag of mangoes, I can say.. An tặng tôi một túi xoài. First, we have the subject, An, then the verb tặng. It’s followed by the person who is receiving the item, in this sentence, tôi, “me.”
Becky: Then we have the object, “a bag of mangoes.”
Huyen: That’s right. So altogether, we have An tặng tôi một túi xoài.
Becky: “An presents me with a bag of mangoes.” What about in a formal situation?
Huyen: In a formal situation, you can use the verb biếu and say.. An biếu bác Minh một túi xoài.
Becky: “An presents Uncle Minh with a bag of mangoes.” Okay, what's the next word?
Huyen: hết hạn
Becky: which means “to expire.”
Huyen: hết hạn is made up of two words, hết, meaning “to end” and hạn, meaning “limit, term.”
Becky: You can use this verb after a noun to indicate that a document has come to the end of its validity or a food item is past its expiration date.
Huyen: We often use this verb with the adverbs đã or rồi, which both mean “already.”
Becky: Okay, now onto the lesson focus.

Lesson focus

Becky: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the verb meaning “to apply.”
Huyen: The word is áp dụng. áp dụng is often used in the passive form to mean “to be applied,” or in past tense or present perfect tense. For example...đã được áp dụng
Becky: which means “to be applied.” And you can use it with the simple sentence pattern.
Huyen: That’s right. First say the subject, then the verb áp dụng. Then you need to add the prepositions cho or với meaning “to” and “with,” respectively, and a noun for a person or thing.
Becky: So, altogether, it will mean “to be applied to someone or something.”
Huyen: That’s right. If something was applied to a specific place, just replace the prepositions cho or với with trong or vào meaning “in” and then add a noun indicating field or place.
Becky: I see. Before we get into more sentences, it seems we need to learn some words we can use together. What are they?
Huyen: First, luật
Becky: “law”
Huyen: quy định
Becky: “regulation”
Huyen: thuế
Becky: “tax”
Huyen: lý thuyết
Becky: “theory”
Huyen: công nghệ, kỹ thuật
Becky: “technology, technique.”
Huyen: These are the nouns that usually work with the phrase áp dụng meaning “to apply.”
Becky: Okay. Can you give us some examples?
Huyen: Sure. Công nghệ này đã được áp dụng vào sản xuất nông nghiệp.
Becky: “This technology has been applied in agricultural production.”
Huyen: First, we have Công nghệ này, “this technology,” and the verb đã được áp dụng
Becky: meaning “to be applied” in the passive form. And the rest is for “in agricultural production”, right?
Huyen: That’s right. vào sản xuất nông nghiệp. All together, we have Công nghệ này đã được áp dụng vào sản xuất nông nghiệp.
Becky: “This technology has been applied in agricultural production.”

Outro

Becky: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Huyen: Cảm ơn các bạn.

Hello Kn,

Thank you for your questions.

Regarding your first question, "good book" = "sách hay". So "good" means "hay"..

About your 2nd question,

"Anh ấy đã tặng cho tôi một quyển sách hay. = He presented me with a good book", "cho" here is more like a preposition, "he presented me WITH a good book". In fact, you can just say "Anh ấy đã tặng tôi một quyển sách hay" without using "CHO".

Your next explanation is correct:

"If we say Anh ấy đã tặng cho tôi một quyển sách hay, it means, He gave me a good book AS A PRESENT"

--> key verb here is TẶNG = PRESENT, CHO is a preposition and not necessary.

but if we say: Anh ấy đã cho tôi một quyển sách hay (without using tặng), we mean: He GAVE me a good book. could be a present could be not --> key verb here is CHO = GAVE

Hope it is clear for you.

Please let us know if you have further question.

Best regards,

Nguyet Nguyen

Hi,

About using tặng (tặng=presented) in a sentence:

Anh ấy đã tặng cho tôi một quyển sách hay. = He presented me with a good book.

Which word or phrase in the sentence means: good.

ALso, the use of "cho tôi" here I find unusual. Usually, seen it used to make a polite request. e.g.

Cho tôi xuống đây - let me get off here

Làm ơn đưa cho tôi cái bút đó - please give me that pen (please may I borrow your pen)

Cho tôi xin hóa đơn? - may I have the bill please

If we say Anh ấy đã tặng cho tôi một quyển sách hay, does it mean, He gave me a good book AS A PRESENT, but if we say: Anh ấy đã cho tôi một quyển sách hay (without using tặng), we mean: He GAVE me a good book. Could be a present, could be because you asked if he had any good books (to borrow).
