Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Vietnamese Season 1, Lesson 17 - Why? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and answer the question ‘why?’ in Vietnamese.

Eric: Here's the way to ask "Why are you late?" in Vietnamese.
Hoang Anh: [Normal] Vì sao bạn đến muộn?
Eric: First is a question word meaning "why"
Hoang Anh: [Normal] vì sao [Slow] vì sao
Eric: Next is the pronoun meaning "you"
Hoang Anh: [Normal] bạn [Slow] bạn
Eric: Next is the verb meaning "to come"
Hoang Anh: [Normal] đến [Slow] đến
Eric: Last is the adjective meaning "late"
Hoang Anh: [Normal] muộn [Slow] muộn
Eric: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the question meaning "Why are you late?"
Hoang Anh: [Slow] Vì sao bạn đến muộn? [Normal] Vì sao bạn đến muộn?
Eric: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the way to say, "I missed the train."
Hoang Anh: [Normal] Tôi bị nhỡ tàu.
Eric: First is a pronoun meaning "I"
Hoang Anh: [Normal] Tôi [Slow] Tôi
Eric: Next is the helping verb to show a negative situation from which the speaker has to suffer.
Hoang Anh: [Normal] bị [Slow] bị
Eric: Next is the verb meaning "to miss"
Hoang Anh: [Normal] nhỡ [Slow] nhỡ
Eric: Last is the noun meaning "train"
Hoang Anh: [Normal] tàu [Slow] tàu
Eric: Listen again to the response meaning "I missed the train."

Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Hoang Anh: There’s a book called Mười vạn câu hỏi vì sao or in English “Ten Thousand ‘Why’ Questions”. It’s a very famous children’s book in Vietnam. The book contains fun and useful explanations about science, the universe, nature, society, arts, and many other topics. It’s considered an encyclopedia for children and is very popular among families with kids. There’s even a kid’s TV program with the same name.
