Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Vietnam series at VietnamesePod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Vietnamese holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson # 15 - International Kites Festival.
The International Kite Festival, or in Vietnamese lễ hội Diều Quốc tế, is held in late March and early April every year in Vũng Tàu, an area located in the southeast region of Vietnam.
In this lesson, we will take a closer look at this festival and describe some of the beautiful kite designs you can find there.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question?
When was the first International Kite Festival held in Vietnam?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
The International Kite Festival is held every year in Vũng Tàu and attracts significant attention from the press both domestically and overseas. At the same time, it’s also a local program aimed at attracting domestic and foreign tourists, or in Vietnamese khách du lịch.
In recent years, this festival has consistently attracted hundreds of craftsmen, or nghệ nhân, from dozens of famous clubs and associations, from many countries around the world. Craftsmen who make and fly their own kites bring to the festival a variety of kite designs and colors imbued with each of their country's national identity. Every year, the special characteristics, uniqueness of technical innovations and artistic performances of the festival turn the sky of Vũng Tàu into a beautiful and lively landscape, while at the same time complementing the natural beauty of this land.
During years in which the festival has been held, there have been many kites which have left deep impressions on the audiences. At the festival in 2009, craftsmen brought a 275 meter-long kite which set the festival record, or kỷ lục, in terms of size. Moreover, each year many kites are designed with special techniques and flown in an enclosed house, which makes the program even more thú vị, meaning interesting.
In 2013, Vũng Tàu also held a Vietnam Kite Contest in December. Thanks to events like these, Vũng Tàu has recently enjoyed significantly increased popularity each and every year.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question!
