Southern Vietnamese Survival Phrases lesson 3 - Please in Southern Vietnamese. |
Today’s phrase will help you take matters into your own hands. Today’s phrase is “please” as in asking for something. In Vietnamese, “please” is xin. |
xin |
Let’s break it down by syllable: xin. |
Now, let’s hear it again, xin. |
The most rudimentary way of using this phrase is pointing at something while saying this phrase, so let’s try and build this up a bit, shall we? |
Let’s start with the expression “This please” which in Vietnamese is (Xin) Cái này. A closer look at this expression shows the word order. In English, “this” comes before “please.” Vietnamese is different. “This” follows “please.” |
Let’s take a look at the word for this. |
“This” is cái này. |
cái này |
Let’s break it down by syllable: cái này. |
Now, let’s hear it again, cái này. |
Looking at the word “this” warrants to look at the word “that” which is cái đó. |
cái đó |
Let’s break it down by syllable: cái đó. |
Now, let’s hear it again, cái đó. |
“Together, please,” the expression is - Xin Cái đó. |
Slowly, Xin Cái đó. |
Let’s break it down by syllable: Xin Cái đó. |
Now, let’s hear it again, Xin Cái đó. |
So notice the similarity between “this” and “that.” They both have the sound cái. |
Now, let’s listen to both one more time. |
The word for “this” is cái này. |
The word for “that” is cái đó. |
So, if you’re at the market and there’s something you want that is close to you, you can use - Xin Cái này. Something a little bit further away, use - Xin Cái đó. |
